I love that Jimmy Smith record. Some tremendous playing from Teddy Edwards. Though I've always wondered why they brought in Leroy Vinnegar on a Hammond B3 date. He sounds good (no surprise), but Jimmy Smith doesn't really need a bassist. Quote

paul secor Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 Duke Ellington 1947 - 1952 (CBS France) - LP 3 Why did Ellington employ so many vocalists who sounded like they were performers in mediocre B movies? (I include Al Hibbler in this group.) Luckily, the instrumentalists in the band were always there to save the day. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 Glad you're listening to this. Duke had an ear for a certain type of vocalist. I've gotten used to them over the years and learned to enjoy them! Quote
