Impulse was special back then. Also forgot that Ron Carter was on bass until I was playing the record. I think it was bit unusual for him to be on this sort of date in 1968, but perhaps I'm wrong. IIRC, Roy Haynes was on some of it as well? On "Frankenstein"? That's the cut that really pulled me into Shepp World as far as straight-up tenor playing. paul secor
According to the liners, Haynes is on "Damn If I Know (The Stroller)" and "Sophisticated Lady". Beaver Harris on "Frankenstein" and "Fiesta". Sounds that way to me. There must be a story how Carter and Haynes ended up playing on this date. Or perhaps Shepp called them and it was just a recording gig.
JSngry
I could be wrong, but I think the drumming credits are reversed? Sure sounds like Roy to me on "Frankenstein", that brittle breaking of it up, but I've not listened in a while.
paul secor
I listened again and it still sounds to me like Beaver of "Frankenstein" and "Fiesta", and Roy on "Damn" and "Sophisticated". I could be wrong. I've been wrong about a lot of things before - just ask my wife about that.
JSngry
And you could be right. Like I said, it's been a while.
mikeweil
Good Tjader solos throughout, nice arrangements. When researching Tjader's discography I found out the album was initially recorded in Los Angeles on October 2, 1967, but the results were rejected. The whole album was re-recorded in New York on December 12, 1967.
mikeweil
Oh my - this is much better than I remembered. Seems like the Mosaic Hines box is one to get. Edited March 24, 2017 by mikeweil

I can recommend the Hines Mosaic. The music was largely new to me but it swings like crazy and Hines' solos are off the scale - very advanced for the time. Great booklet and sound as per usual. Now back to vinyl...
mikeweil
Listening to the complete double LP and your comment have convinced me the Hines Mosaic is indeed indispensable - excellent music, and I enjoy Eckstine's vocals a lot. My wife enjoys the music to, so no ojections from that side.
