There's been a CD reissue some years back, but this is really music that should be enjoyed on vinyl.

yeah, my friend did the CD reissue but I'd never seen an original copy until last week! It was a trade with another gent and worked out perfectly.

I heard them play live around the time this was issued - great night of music. Time to give this another hearing. ((I agree about the cover image.)

That cover probably was received very well, because one year later his next album looked like this:

I don't how well those covers were received, but I consider them two of the worst looking covers in my collection.

The Captain has the most absurd cover of the three (IMO), but is also excellent.

My expectations might have been too high because of the calibre of the other players (Sunny Murray, Byard Lancaster...), but none of his three records really works for me.

Or maybe it's just the covers that kill them...

I don't think the two w/ Lancaster are all that great, but they're curious documents and I guess I'm glad they exist.

IDREES SULIEMAN QUINTET: BIRD´S GRASS. STEEPLECHASE SCS 1202 [1985]

Art Farmer and Joe Henderson, Yama (CTI). Way better than I was expecting, especially side 1.

Donald Byrd, A New Perspective (Blue Note, NY USA Mono). With trashed cover, but decent looking vinyl, a great sounding record. 

Urbie Green, Senor Blues (CTI). A couple of dubious tracks, but otherwise rather good. Includes a fine version of Ysabel's Table Dance. Excellent straight ahead solo work from Grover Washington.

 

 

Lenny Niehaus, Octets volume 2 (Contemporary mono)
