jeffcrom Posted November 27, 2016 Report Posted November 27, 2016 Birdland Stars - On Tour Vol. 1 (RCA Victor). Recorded after the tour, with annoying fake applause. Some nice blowing, though. Pee Wee Russell Plays (Dot stereo). Pee Wee's originals, with Buck Clayton, Vic Dickenson, and Bud Freeman sharing the front line. I really love this album. Quote

jeffcrom Posted November 28, 2016 Report Posted November 28, 2016 Luis Russell and his Louisiana Swing Orchestra (Columbia).. Enjoying the pre-Red Allen tracks more than I ever have before - although the band became a real force of nature when Allen and Pops Foster joined. Quote

jeffcrom Posted November 28, 2016 Report Posted November 28, 2016 Louis Armstrong - Disney Songs the Satchmo Way (Buena Vista). This 1968 offering is as corny as you might imagine, but it has Armstrong's last great trumpet solos (on "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "Chim Chim Cheree"), and his vocal on "When You Wish Upon a Star" is just gorgeous. Just last week I talked about this with someone who was actually present at the 1971 concert. He told me the complete concert was recorded by French radio for broadcasting and included a first set which featured just one long and very "free" improvisation. When ECM released the concert one or two years later that first set was left out. Luckily, we've got those Japanese LP's to get an impression of what this quartet was really about. Quote

Interesting, to have been at the concert would've been great. On first acquaintance I find the studio date the strongest and I'm pleased to have got hold of both as alternatives to the ECM (which I do enjoy but now seems less consistent in comparison) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted November 30, 2016 Report Posted November 30, 2016 Johnny Griffin "sextet" (riverside, mono DG USA) Motoharu Yoshizawa "outfit" (trio, Japan). I think this might be my favorite of the 3 I have by this outstanding Japanese bassist. Quote
