clifford_thornton Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Joe McPhee - Black Magic Man - (Hat Hut) great and lo-fi live date with Mike Kull, Ernest Bostic, Tyrone Crabb and Bruce Thompson. McPhee's doing his screaming and hollering thing on side two right now... nice! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Clifford Thornton - Freedom & Unity - (Third World original) great '67 session with Karl Berger, Joe McPhee, Jimmy Garrison, Don Moore, and the brothers Edward and Harold Avent. Too bad this copy is so ratty (most copies I've run into are beat to shit)... if anybody wants to unload an M-, I'd be glad to oblige! Quote

clifford_thornton Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Ornette Coleman - In Europe, volume 2 - (Polydor Freedom gatefold) second half of the watershed London trio concert, which sounds great even though from what I've read, the concert sounded like a snowball-effect of headaches. I do really like these Polydor Freedom series LPs - much nicer sound and presentation than their American counterparts. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 To continue in the Ornette mode: Ornette Coleman - Chappaqua Suite - (CBS Sony Japan pressing) too bad this music wasn't used in the original Rooks film. Might have made the film more memorable! Quote
kh1958 Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Magic Sam--West Side Soul--Delmark Junior Mance Trio--Live at the Village Vanguard--Jazzland LP (original I think--kind of noisy surface but otherwise nice sound). Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Noah Howard - Quartet - (ESP original stereo) not really my favorite Howard date, but Colbeck shines and the rhythm section is very nice, Scotty Holt on bass (Jackie Mc associate) and Dave Grant on drums. Sort of meandering musically, but what can ya do? Quote
brownie Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Phil Woods 'Musique du Bois' (Muse) with a backing from Jaki Byard, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson, Woods catches fire! Quote
Clunky Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 John Lewis/Bill Perkins 'Grand Encounter' (King World Pacific) Got the Vogue (UK) version of this date very recently. A bit of surface noise doesn't detract from a very solid performance and oustanding sound for the period. Very nice. Fletcher Henderson - The Indispensible- RCA 2LP- , great sound, listening right now to Shoe shine boy and others featuring Eldridge and Chu Berry. Quote

I listened to this once when I got it, and it's been just sitting there ever since. I retired from my job two weeks ago (though my wife has plenty of ideas to fill up my "free time"), so I have more time to listen these days, and this was just waiting to be listened to again. I'd forgotten how good this music is, and how many great musicians played on these Hamp sessions. Quote
