Two Tranes this morning. Both in mono but don't sound any the worse for that. HMV pressings ultra reliable and quiet.

A love supreme---(HMV) mono

Crescent------(HMV) mono

very impressive....i bet they sound sooooooooooo much better than the US impluses......are they the same stampers (RVG) even if not, i bet they still sound sooooooo much better

It's really good. I could easily get you a copy as it seems to float around NYC bins a lot.

None of my HMV Impulses have RVG stamped on them. Second generation tapes were used. As I recall it the deluxe 2CD of A Love Supreme issued a few years ago was sourced from the UK copy tapes of the stereo master, used orginally for the HMV release.

Early copies of the HMV Kulu Se Mama contained Om, which had not been released yet! ABC sent the wrong master.

That is crazy!!

This discussion of HMV pressings vs Impulse pressings is making me feel like I'm reading a Steve Hoffmann forum!  All I can say is that the few clean original Impulse pressings I have all sound fantastic.

Right now:

Gerd Dudek & Takehira Honda "flying to the sky" (Trio, Japan) great session with some impressive support by Gunter Lenz and Motohiko Hino.

I've got copies of both of those Coltrane HMVs that Clunky mentions. They sound very good but not necessarily to my mind superior to the original Impulses. Maybe condition has something to do with it, as old Impulses over here can sometimes be pretty beat up.

The worst Impulses are those Canadian Spartans - garbage ! Original orange and red/black (including later pressings) usually sound pretty good to me. The red/blacks can often be really good value.

I got a Sparton pressing of Coleman Hawkins "Wrapped Tight" that was pressed with RVG stampers and it sounded OK to me.

Last night and this morning:

Earl Hines - Quintessential Recording Session (Chiaroscuro)

Eddie Lang & Joe Venuti - Stringing the Blues (CBS)

Have the Lang/Venuti in other forms - wonderful music.

Wish the Hines were readily available, but I guess I already have enough Hines to listen to.

ArtBlakeyandTheloniousMonk_JazzMessenger

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk (Atlantic.4 Men with Beards)

I listened once and then compared the 4 Men with Beards LP to the Rhino CD. (I should know better by now than to drive myself crazy doing this sort of thing.) The CD version jacks up the sound and gives more presence to the bass. The LP sounds more relaxed, but the bass is recessed - perhaps that's how the bass sounded in the original issue. In the end, I'll keep both - the CD primarily for the additional tracks.

Note to myself - listen for enjoyment - not to make comparisons.

First owned it c.1960 on vinyl, later on CD. Agree Art and Spanky sounded less together than on recordings like Hard Drive. Thanks for alerting me to the extra tracks. Will give it a listen on Spotify.
