Terrible jacket but the record looks okay but sounds a bit gritty. Nice album John. My copy is a US 2-eye, mono, sounds pretty good, haven't noticed any grittiness. This one isn't on the Mosaic Select, of course. Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 Sidney Bechet - King of the Soprano Saxophone (Good Time Jazz). 1952-55 French recordings; the 1954 session with Jonah Jones along with a pretty random selection of other tracks. Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 28, 2015 Report Posted November 28, 2015 Steve Lacy - Points (Le Chant du Monde). Lacy's 1978 tribute to the soprano saxophone. I mean, that's what all his albums are, but this one was specifically meant to be a tribute to his instrument. It's got a two-soprano version of "The Mooche," a solo medley of "In a Sentimental Mood" and "My Favorite Things" to honor Hodges and Coltrane, and his soprano duet suite "3 Points." Quote

kh1958 Posted November 28, 2015 Report Posted November 28, 2015 Paul Horn Four, Impressions! (World Pacific), and Pepper Adams, Critics' Choice* (World Pacific). The sound of the wonderful bassist Doug Watkins, is brilliantly captured on the Pepper Adams record. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 29, 2015 Report Posted November 29, 2015 Lonnie Smith, Spiral (Palmetto), Jack Bruce and Robin Trower, Seven Moons, Coleman Hawkins, Alive at the Village Gate (Verve), and Hampton Hawes, Northern Window (Prestige). Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 29, 2015 Report Posted November 29, 2015 Masters of Unorthodox Jazz - Overground - (Barabbas, recent seemingly-authorized reissue) rugged Austrian free music session - the privately-pressed original is obscenely rare. Quote

jeffcrom Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 Rev. Johnny L. "Hurricane" Jones - Do Your Thing (Jewel). A sermon and a handful of songs and prayers from 1974. Julian Bond is in the congregation - name-checked by The Hurricane. The great Clarence Fountain joins Rev. Jones on "Walk With Me." And The Hurricane somehow manages to mash up one of Jesus' parables and an Isaac Hayes song: "And he said to the servant with one talent, "You didn't Do Your Thing!'" Right now this seems as good as any music / performance I've ever heard. Quote
mjazzg Posted December 2, 2015 Report Posted December 2, 2015 Steve Lacy & Cie - The Owl [Saravah] first listen .I'm drawn in as much by Ms Aebi's vocals as anything else. I can see myself returning to this one many times to fully appreciate what's going on Quote
