Joe Newman ------The Happy Cats---------( Vogue/ Coral)

Decent modern arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ernie Wilkins . Mainly Basieites with Johnny Acea and Connie Kay the exceptions. The Basie feel is limited with the proceedings sound more modern in the whole. Lovely date. Recommended.

Jym Young's San Francisco Avant-garde - Puzzle Box - (International Polydor GER orig)

excellent quartet date with Bennett Friedman, Harley White and Jim Messinger.

Nice record, but I always wondered why they would have called their band "Avant Garde".

Had a Japanese press of that Jym Young LP many years ago but got rid of it because it didn't really do much for me. Ā I'll have to dig out my CDR some day and see if my ears are more receptive to it these days!

Tonight's spins:

Kenny Burrell "on view at the five spot" (Blue Note, 47 w 63rd mono)

Takeru Muruoka "Takeru" (Philips, Japan)
