Decent modern arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ernie Wilkins . Mainly Basieites with Johnny Acea and Connie Kay the exceptions. The Basie feel is limited with the proceedings sound more modern in the whole. Lovely date. Recommended.

Nice record, but I always wondered why they would have called their band "Avant Garde".

Probably a marketing decision from Polydor.

There's more material from those (or similar) sessions in the vaults, some of which has apparently seen digital release. I think at least some of that is more "out."

Had a Japanese press of that Jym Young LP many years ago but got rid of it because it didn't really do much for me.  I'll have to dig out my CDR some day and see if my ears are more receptive to it these days!
