Late
The schmaltz level is so high that it's somehow, blackhole-wise, a good record.

JSngry
I think that's what he was thinking about his bass when they took that picture.

paul secor
And now ... I can't tell if this is a terrible record or a hidden gem. But I am spinning it. Jimmy Bowen was smart enough to leave performing and became a successful (in terms of sales, anyway) producer. Kevin Bresnahan
Roland Hanna - The New York Jazz Quartet in Chicago (Bee Hive). Nice date. I am looking forward to the Mosaic box. No permanent picture on line. By the way discogs.com - if you are reading this - Fuck you for blocking us from using your images.

Kevin Bresnahan
John Coltrane - Coltrane Plays The Blues (Atlantic reissue). This reissue doesn't sound all that great on my system. The piano sounds wonky.

jeffcrom
Ornette Coleman - Crisis (Impulse). In spite of the muddy recording and Denardo's still-unfinished drumming style, this is one of my favorite Ornette albums - a masterpiece, in my opinion. I was in New York a few days ago, and coincidentally, on the day he died, I attended a reception at New York University, on the site of the Loeb Student Center, where this was recorded. That building has been replaced by a newer one, but I still felt as if I was on holy ground. RIP, Ornette.

After reading your post, I'll have to give it another try. Well, the sound is a real barrier to getting to the music. for one thing. But to elaborate on some of the highlights as I hear them - I love the construction of "Broken Shadows." Each horn solos in turn while the others play the theme; the piece ends with a really moving (for me) anthemic presentation of the theme in harmony. And "Trouble in the East" (apparently mislabeled "Space Jungle") is just one of the most exciting pieces of music I know - a driving theme bookending a complex, passionate collection improvisation. Again, the sound gets in the way of it all. But I've found my way through that so that I can enjoy the music. This album has a catalog number in line with some Universal Justice releases, though no label is listed. Heavy one. Can you or other members recommend a publication focussing in depth on this scene (BAG, Human Arts Ensemble, Committe for Universal Justice, the Universal Justice label...) ? I love the music, as well as the "look" and the "feel" of those records, and I'd really like to learn more about the socio-political and cultural context. corto maltese
Philippe Mate/Jef Gilson "workshop" (Palm, France). Have not played this in at least 10 years; much better then I remember it being! Difficult to go wrong with Palm - great label... Do you have Maté's duo record with Daniel Vallancien on Saravah ? Not really jazz, I suppose, but a terrific record.
