Fabuloso! Welcome to the club. Purdie and Idris can be pretty groovy at times, too.

Now playing

Eric Dolphy 'Out There' (Esquire)

Esquire!? And it's still audible?

MG

Yes, actually sounds fantastic - the clarity of cello and bass is amazing. Most likely better than the original New Jazz in terms of audio quality (not too difficult). 'RVG' in the runout.

Now spinning Tubby Hayes Orchestra '100% Proof' (Fontana mono)

Wow! Every Esquire album I ever saw looked and sounded like it had been to about 784 parties and been played all night using a rusty nail!

Just played

Yes, a typical problem with well-played Esquires is that they have been played on old 1950s gramaphones with knitting needles wired to tin cans. Fortunately, I think this one was treated with kid gloves. In good condition they usually sound very full and with lots of 'body'.

Continuing in the Dexter 'vein', BN mono originals of 'Dexter Calling', 'Gettin Around' and the stereo 'Our Man In Paris' on deck next.

Dexter Gordon--Doin' All Right--side 2--this Liberty pressing (an early one, I think), purchased used years ago, sounds great, except that there is distortion in the saxophone, like someone played it with a bad needle, but for some reason it only affected the tenor. Frustrating.

Freddie Hubbard--High Energy--side 2--electric Freddie, but that version of Too High, sounds great to me--electrified trumpet and all, with fantastic Junior Cook.

Flight of the Fly is a GREAT LP - too bad it hasn't been reissued. Or has it?

Paul, don't think it has ever been reissued (same goes for the other marvels from the Chant du Monde piano series).

The Byard is a wonderful album. Somehow it was in the wrong place and I only managed to locate it a few days ago! Glad I spinned that one...

Now enjoying:

Dave McKenna 'A Celebration of Hoagy Carmichael' (Concord)

Another amazing piano player!

Big John Patton 'Along Came John' (BN NY USA stereo original). Great though this session sounds on the Mosaic Select, it truly comes to life on the vinyl. The depth of the B-3 sound and the pedal-work was captured superbly by RVG.

Getting ready for my first concert of the year, David Fathead Newman next Saturday:

David Newman--Heads Up (Atlantic)--love the title track (tenor), Delilah (on flute), and For Buster (on alto).
