mjazzg Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 Polar Bear - Same As You [Leaf] once again this 'Jazz' band produce an album of music that's not really jazz at all and sounds very modern. Quote
kh1958 Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 Arnett Cobb, Ballads by Cobb (Prestige Moodsville), and Jackie McLean, 'Bout Soul (Blue Note Liberty) Quote
Clunky Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 Earlier Billy Bang -------Rainbow Gladiator-----(Soul Note) Good band. Rosewomen and Chalres Tyler are excellent. The former is pretty much an unknown quantity to me. Now Andrew Hill---------------Judgment-----------(BN) NYC mono Nothing new to say that hasn't been said before. The quality of Hill's first four BNs are astonishing given how closely together they were recorded (November 1963 to March '64) Quote
mjazzg Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 There's a good Michelle Rosewoman leader date on Soul Note, 'The Source' with Baikida Carroll and Pheeroan Ak Laff. Mind you I've not listened to it in ages John Stevens - Spontaneous Music Ensemble [Polydor] aka Oliv. Quote

I have high expectations for both,! Quote

I'm torn as I love the LP version so much I'm unsure whether the extras on the CD will somehow spoil things. I know, I can't help it...... Monoceros, I must buy however Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 Nothing is spoilt on the CD issue. The original LP presentation still stands, and the extra tracks are very cool. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) Nothing is spoilt on the CD issue. The original LP presentation still stands, and the extra tracks are very cool. Thanks. I think 'spoil' was my wrong choice really. There are some albums which just seem complete as they are on two sides of vinyl. The addition of extra music changes the listening experience inevitably. More isn't always better but I'll certainly take note that the extra material is worth hearing and will order accordingly Edited March 30, 2015 by mjazzg Quote

corto maltese Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 Michelle Rosewoman - The Source [soul Note] This one hasn't survived the current trimming down of my collection. She's a fine player, but this set never really catches fire and things aren't helped by the thin, boxy recording and AkLaff's not very inspired drumming. I much prefer Bang's "Rainbow Gladiator". Leeway Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 A WELL KEPT SECRET - Beaver Harris/Don Pullen 360 Degree Experience. I like the album but even if I didn't, I'd get it for that Ralph Steadman cover illustration. Are there other Steadman LP covers out there? Quote
Leeway Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 For whatever reason(s), I rarely come across Leo label LPs when I'm out there casually trolling for records. So particularly glad to find this one and Baltic Triangle, both mint, just recently. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 I only have a few; the Carlos Ward Quartet w/ Woody Shaw and Amina Claudine Myers' Song For Mother E are both pretty excellent. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 Playing CDs now but earlier I played: Karin Krog "Joy" (Sonet, Japan) Quote
Clunky Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 Bud Freeman --------and his Summa Cum Laude trio------(Dot) Modern sounding Bud solos plenty support by Mousey Alexander (drums) and Bob Hammer (piano). Hammer whose name I'm not familiar with sounds good. Modern swing the kind of thing Scott Hamilton has been playing for several decades. Whilst there's clearly no bebop here it does sound 'modern' to my ears. Sits nicely along side Bud's "Something tender" (UA) which I'll play next. I prefer the latter but the Dot date doesn't deserve it's obscurity. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 ^ That looks like it would be good. Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 Freddie Hubbard "goin up" (blue note, 47 w 63rd mono) a slightly worn copy but plays surprisingly well...these old blue notes are pretty durable! A beautiful date by an all star cast. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 Don Rendell "space walk" (EMI Columbia, UK). This copy is pristine...great 1972 session. Quote
B. Clugston Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 Gunter Hampel and his Galaxie Dream Band, Celebrations (Birth). 2 LP set of the octet version of the band. Nice album and I also like the fact I don't have to colour in the cover on this one. Quote
