mjazzg Posted March 16, 2015 Report Posted March 16, 2015 John Handy - Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz festival [CBS] I do like the sound of this group - exciting stuff,a proper live recording Quote
B. Clugston Posted March 16, 2015 Report Posted March 16, 2015 Miles Davis, On the Corner. I never tire of listening to this. I love that album and the complete "on the corner" CD box set is simply incredible Have been spinning that set this week and agree. Just too bad that Bob Belden didn't get the permission to put out the 2x4CD sets ! I think the previously unreleased material from the later sessions included in that set is mostly underwhelming. The introduction price was inflated. What material would have been on those 2x4CD sets, Sidewinder? There were some alternate takes not included, a meandering jam with Miles Davis on organ, the studio version of a piece they played live during the Sam Morrison era, and a brief snippet of Reggie Lucas playing some howling guitar. I wonder if there was an intent to include some unedited "Calypso Frelimo" segments. There's also a 1976 session with Sam Morrison and Pete Cosey with a disengaged Miles on organ. Miles Davis, On the Corner. I never tire of listening to this. I love that album and the complete "on the corner" CD box set is simply incredible It was a revelation to hear the unedited "On the Corner" takes. I always thought there was far more severe editing done on the two long pieces. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 Clifford Jordan / Sonny Red - A Story Tale (Jazzland mono) definetly never seen this one before well i just won a copy of this... Quote
Clunky Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 Ray Russell Quartet-----------Dragon Hill---------(CBS Realm) Good session Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 Another one I would like to improve upon vinyl condition-wise. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 Thank God for those Sony CD reissues from some years back! I got rid of my Howard Riley CBS Lps after those CDs came out...too many Rice Krispies in the mix Have a visually mint "turn circle" but as per usual it has its share of snap, crackle, and pop. Quote
Clunky Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 I must be lucky as the two I have sound just fine, (Dragon Hill and Baptised Traveller) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 My copy would be fine save for a hairline that clicks through one of Ray's solos in a quieter area. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 My copy would be fine save for a hairline that clicks through one of Ray's solos in a quieter area. at least when it was vinyl or nothing, we could listen through stuff like that. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 Now: Gruppo di Improvisazione Nuova Consonanza - Improvisazione - (DGG, Ger, out of the Avant-garde Vol. 2 box) been a while since I spun this. Better than I remember. Quote
paul secor Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 Jimmy Knepper Quintet: Dream Dancing (Criss Cross) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 Michel Portal "our meanings and our feelings" (Pathe Marconi, France). I paid a good chunk of change for this around 20 years ago but do not regret it as this copy is in perfect condition and has not a single pop to be heard. Great session and impeccable recording quality... Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 TOKK ensemble "music for living process" (RCA, Japan). Always good to hear Toshi Ichiyanagi and Takehisa Kosugi performing together... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 That Portal is good. Still would like to get a copy of Music for Living Process - seems like it's findable, albeit not cheap. Quote
corto maltese Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 What would happen if Homefromtheforest would put a sub-$ 100 record on his turntable? Anyway, great choices! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 It's happened before - nobody died as far as I know... Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 What would happen if Homefromtheforest would put a sub-$ 100 record on his turntable? Anyway, great choices! I need to justify my extravagant purchases over the last 25 years by actually playing them Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 yeah, I feel the same way. My most monetarily valuable records have definitely received quite a fair amount of careful play. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 The Human Arts Ensemble - Live vol.II [Circle Records] definitely less than $100 but well worth a listen nonetheless Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 $9 good music and $500 good music are often equally good. Or, the same music on an original Hank Mobley 1568 is on the CD... Quote
mjazzg Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 With you there although I've never knowingly listened to any $500 good music Quote
Clunky Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 Hampton Hawes afternoon here, The Sermon- 1958 recording , 80s Fantasy "digital issue" The Green Leaves of Summer- 1964 recording, 70s issue on very thin vinyl I'm all smiles- 1966 recording , 1973 issue (original?) I wasn't impressed by Smiles, perhaps the material but it did very little to float my boat , so it goes on the sale pile. The other two were better with Green Leaves perhaps the more interesting. Sermon is more boppish whereas Green Leaves seems more transitional to his later style. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 Yes, that would be the original of I'm All Smiles. It's ok, band and material looks like it would be cooler than it is. I prefer Spanish Steps (Woode and Taylor) and would like to hear Hamp's Piano on Saba/MPS (Weber, Weiss). Quote
