corto maltese Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) Toshi Ichiyanagi/Michael Ranta/Takehisa Kosugi "improvisation 1975" (iskra, Japan). Probably one of the rarest records in my collection and one of my favorite "avant garde" records. The original pressing sounds 10 times better then the bootlegs more commonly available It's the only bootleg in my collection, I think. I loathe those cheaply produced counterfeits the reissue market is flooded with (think Phoenix records for this kind of music). But this is a record I really want and I still haven't found a copy at a price I could afford. So the boot is there on the shelf. Mind you, I refuse to play it. It's just waiting to be replaced by the real thing. Edited March 13, 2015 by corto maltese Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 I have the Iskra/Cortical LP of Improvisation September 1975 as well - interesting record, and since I'll never be able to find/afford an original, it'll have to do. Quote

Just too bad that Bob Belden didn't get the permission to put out the 2x4CD sets ! Quote

The introduction price was inflated. What material would have been on those 2x4CD sets, Sidewinder? Quote
Clunky Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 Don Rendell/ Ian Carr Quintet-----------Live at the Union------(Stamford Audio) Slightly dusty recording but generally exciting 2LP set . Rendell plays well , even Brian Morton might agree. Quote

colinmce Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 I'm not Paul but I wouldn't label it as essential. As the title might indicate, it's pretty much a blowing date. The Mo'tet Soul Note is much, much better. Quote

The Mo'tet Soul Note is much, much better. thanks. I have the Mo'tet already and enjoy that I actually like it better than the Mo'tet date. I enjoy hearing Bobby Bradford doing somewhat straight ahead blowing. The sax player on the Mo'tet does a lot to spoil it for me. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 15, 2015 Report Posted March 15, 2015 John Patton "along came john" (blue note, mono NY USA) Michel Portal "splendid yzelment" (akt/CBS, France). Have not played this in at least 15 years...good to dig it out again. Sounds amazing...think tomorrow night I'll have to pull out "our meanings and our feelings"! Quote

I've seen mention that he wanted to do 4cds covering 1972 then another 4 covering 73 to 75. this would have included stuff that Miles didn't play on but which added insight into the development of the music. Sony/BMG put a stop to this plan apparently. Quote

jeffcrom Posted March 15, 2015 Report Posted March 15, 2015 The Soul of Jazz (World Wide Stereo). An odd one from Savoy's short-lived stereo subsidiary label. All the tunes are fake gospel tunes (except for "Royal Garden Blues," which is there for some reason) arranged by Billy VerPlanck. But the solos, by Joe Wilder, Billy Harris, Bobby Jaspar, Pepper Adams, and Eddie Costa (on piano) are really good. Quote
