Homefromtheforest Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Jackie McLean "destination out" (Blue Note, NY USA mono). Interesting that this does not have a DG on one side like my 2 stereo copies. Sounds a bit punchier in mono but I think I prefer the stereo presentation actually...or maybe it's just my ears have gotten so used to the stereo issue! Alas still not a dead silent copy...just enough soft crackles in spots to annoy me a bit Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Black Unity Trio "al-fatihah" (salaam, USA). Finally got a copy of this killer album...not the best copy but it will suffice considering I got this for a small fraction of the price top copies have gone for in the past few years. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Neu! "s/t" (Brain, green metronome) a stone mint copy of their amazing debut...have not played this in at least 15 years...if I can stay awake I might pull out "2" and "75" off the shelves too! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Louis Moholo Octet - Spirits Rejoice! [Ogun] today's arrival, rejoice indeed! You could have had my vinyl! I only use the CD now. One of my favourite Oguns (though be aware they have the titles on side 2 reversed on the LP cover - not that that will affect listening pleasure). Now he tells me! Happy to house any other redundant Oguns I'll send you a PM at the weekend. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 King Crimson " court of the crimson king" (Canada , Atlantic 1st press)... First Canadian pressing and actually quite great sounding! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Black Unity Trio "al-fatihah" (salaam, USA). Finally got a copy of this killer album...not the best copy but it will suffice considering I got this for a small fraction of the price top copies have gone for in the past few years. Sick. I've been trying to get one for many years, though often the copies that come up are hammered... excellent session though. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Yeah it's a killer album for sure. My copy is a bit crackly and the cover is a pretty worn too but for less then $200 I'll take it. Really too bad that proposed reissue years ago never happened... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 yeah, that is a "good deal." Bid much more and lost several times. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 While in my last year of high school I took a chance on a record because of the cover shot of a "crazed musician". It was a clear/yellow vinyl pressing in stereo with the blue label. That record went the way of much vinyl to finance cds on my label. When my father died a few years ago I found a copy I had given him. Sadly, only black vinyl but it still sounds great. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Wish I still had those Nighthawk lps. Quote
B. Clugston Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 Horace Tapscott & Arkestra, The Call. Great session--love those massed basses on Side 2. Teddy Charles, 3 For Duke. With Hall Overton and Oscar Pettiford in great form. Seriously underrated record. Dewey Redman, Coincide. Nice latter -day Impulse date. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 "QOW" is on Coincide and you can't fuck with that tune. Dewey's Impulse albums are wonderful. Quote
paul secor Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 Wish I still had those Nighthawk lps. Most - perhaps all - of the music is available on various European CDs, but Nighthawk certainly did a very nice job of presenting this music back on LP back in the day. Quote
Clunky Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 Jackie McLean --------A fickle sonance ---------(BN NY mono) This is a top drawer transitional date IMO Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 I love that session too...alas only a mint Japanese King issue of it here in my shelves...would love to have an original mono! Quote

sidewinder Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) Chitinous Ensemble 'Chitinous' (Deram, stereo) Awesome albums!! Particularly love "phase III"! Have them on vinyl and CD as well... Yes, good as the CDs are I always like to hear these on vinyl to appreciate the interaction and dynamism of this group. Garrick is particularly good on 'Phase III', even though he does throw in a bit of 'Maybe It's because I'm A Londoner' like a Pearly King in his first solo (only British jazz could get away with that). Homefromtheforest Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 Guy Warren of Ghana "Afro jazz" (Columbia lansdowne, stereo)...,pulled out of the shelves inspired by Sidewinder's "rendell/Carr" selections! Still need to hear that Chitinous Ensemble album...Sidewinder - a few years ago a "hi-fi" shop had a special promotion in town here in vancouver where they had these special $100,000 speakers on display and you could bring your favorite record to audition on these speakers. I brought my mint stereo copy of "phase III" to hear on these speakers...sounded unreal! Can't remember the brand name of the speakers but yes - their price tag was around $100,000!!! Is that what that whimsical little melody is from? I love that first solo of his on that track haha...interesting tidbit! Quote
sidewinder Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 Yes, he even plays it in the style of the barrel organs that the cockney street musicians of the time would use. Pete La Roca 'Turkish Women At The Bath' (Douglas) Garbage recording, great session.. Quote
