colinmce Posted June 14, 2014 Report Posted June 14, 2014 Duke Jordan: Flight to Jordan (Savoy Jazz) Abysmal cover/great music. "Flight To Jordan" is one of my favorite jazz compositions. I may prefer the Blue Note version with Dizzy Reece, but the Savoy recording is very nice, too. Quote

When I was listening last night I found myself wondering how they came up with it. And agreement on the music. That's the most important thing. Quote

sidewinder Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 Dexter Gordon 'Sophisticated Giant' (UK CBS). Donald Byrd 'Early Byrd' (CBS 2LP, mono) - appalling cover art but great music and surprisingly good mid-70s pressing. Quote

B. Clugston Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Sam Rivers, Sizzle (Impulse). Definitely in the top 10 of records inexplicably never reissued on CD. Quote
porcy62 Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Nick Drake - Fruit Tree, Island box set. Quote
mjazzg Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Sam Rivers - Sizzle [impulse]thanks to B.Clugson for the prompt. Lovely session Quote
Clunky Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 My favourite Doors album. My copy has a "transparency "'front cover photo of the band with the yellow background coming from the inner sleeve. The cornets of the album cover are rounded off to give the impression of a mounted 35mm transparency . Cool idea totally lost with subsequent reissues. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Not really a follower of the band, but I like the gimmix cover version. I'm trying to think of another Elektra cover that was done as a gimmix, but am drawing a blank. Quote

Leeway Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 I always thought the Stones "Satanic Majesties Request" was the coolest cover with the 3D effect: Just listened to: WAVES - Sam Rivers, Dave Holland, Joe Daley, Thurman Barker - Tomato LP (with the red tomato). Quote
porcy62 Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 The nicest gimmix Stone cover is the zip cover of Sticky Fingers IMHO Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 Thanks for the tip on the Bread LP. Yeah, not collecting rock records actively frees me from most gimmix sleeves, though Nucleus' Elastic Rock does have a nice cutaway design. And then there's all the Breuker absurdity - chocolate boxes, jute bags, triangle sleeves, etc. Cool concepts but the chocolate box especially is a poorly-wearing design. Splits for days. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted June 17, 2014 Report Posted June 17, 2014 That chocolate box always looked so annoying to me I happily bought the slightly later gatefold 2LP pressing of it years ago! Quote

porcy62 Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 One of those rock albums that sounds almost "too much" perfect, but WOW! I still love and enjoy it after 35 years of listeng. Quote
mjazzg Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Sam Rivers - Crystals (Impulse/abc]the one Rivers album I've never regarded as highly as the many others I own. Sounding good today though, maybe a reevaluation is in the offing Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Duke Jordan: Flight to Jordan (Savoy Jazz) As an added bonus, a lot of those late 70's/early 80's red-label Savoys were cut by RVG and sound pretty good. Quote
