Clunky Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 The Grateful Dead------------Hampton '79--------------(Rhino) Brief look into my local record shop. Few things tempted me. I've only a very little Dead in my collection but went for this RSD release to support the shop. It's a pretty good performance in slightly better than average (for sound board) recording quality. Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 20, 2014 Report Posted April 20, 2014 Kenny Barron - Golden Lotus (Muse). Nice date - killer lineup. I never saw this on CD. Did it ever make it? Quote
Leeway Posted April 20, 2014 Report Posted April 20, 2014 I knew I had Vol. I of the Tuba Trio laying about, wanted to play it with Vol. II, but simply could not find it, until I accidentally turned it up looking for something else: Now I need Vol. III. Quote
Clunky Posted April 20, 2014 Report Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) Kenny Barron - Golden Lotus (Muse). Nice date - killer lineup. I never saw this on CD. Did it ever make it? All 5 tracks are on "Sunset" 2CD compilation issued in 1999 on the Camden Deluxe imprint. Edited April 20, 2014 by Clunky Quote

paul secor Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 Frank Lowe/Phillip Wilson: Out of Nowhere (Ecstatic Peace) Paul, wanted to ask you what you thought of this album. I got a quick listen to it up in NYC and it struck me as rather tame and conventional, which was a huge disappointment. However, I did not have much time to spend with it (even though it is only one-sided). Your thoughts? I like it. It's short - only two cuts on one side - and not as "out" as much of Lowe's playing, but there's good interplay between he and Phillip Wilson, and it presents a side of Lowe that I enjoy hearing. clifford_thornton Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 I used to have a very crackly copy of this, which is too bad because the Sonatas are beautiful. Would like to find a clean-sounding copy. Quote

Leeway Posted April 23, 2014 Report Posted April 23, 2014 Marion Brown - November Cotton Flower [baystate] finally found a copy at a reasonable price and the wait was worth it Cool find! I've flipped through a zillion LPs in dealer bins and never seen this one (but now that you've broken the ice, maybe it will happen). I don't know if it is indicated on the LP jacket, but the title is from a fine Jean Toomer poem. Quote

The cover and insert's mostly in Japanese but I had no idea about the title's inspiration - I will investigate the poem this evening Quote

The cover and insert's mostly in Japanese but I had no idea about the title's inspiration - I will investigate the poem this evening Doing my part for poetry November Cotton Flower BY JEAN TOOMER Boll-weevil’s coming, and the winter’s cold, Made cotton-stalks look rusty, seasons old, And cotton, scarce as any southern snow, Was vanishing; the branch, so pinched and slow, Failed in its function as the autumn rake; Drouth fighting soil had caused the soil to take All water from the streams; dead birds were found In wells a hundred feet below the ground— Such was the season when the flower bloomed. Old folks were startled, and it soon assumed Significance. Superstition saw Something it had never seen before: Brown eyes that loved without a trace of fear, Beauty so sudden for that time of year. mjazzg Posted April 23, 2014 Report Posted April 23, 2014 Just been reading, and enjoying it online. Now learning about Toomer whilst listening to this (sent to it by references to Karintha) more Toomer poetry here too I only now realise. Here's to the O Board's (and Leeway's) educational powers - Brit finally learns something about American poetry Quote
