Leeway Posted March 29, 2014 Report Posted March 29, 2014 Cecil McBee Sextet - Music from the Source [Enja] perfectly uplifting music for a lovely sunny spring day in London town. Another purchase prompted by a post on this board - thanks Leeway Happy to be of service, but I consider it simple recompense, if that, for all the cool LPs you've posted. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 29, 2014 Report Posted March 29, 2014 Stan Tracey "perspectives" (Columbia, UK). Today's arrival from France...finally found this for a reasonable price but upon playing it almost all of track 1 had an audible crackle every revolution. I really hate vinyl some days...looks like I might have to try and return this one. My copy of that one seems to be fine - nice album. However some of those UK Columbias can be a bit hit and miss, with that crackle issue. Fontanas too. Quote

That trio has to be right up there in the list of my most overwhelming live music experiences Bah. How'd you swing that one? in the Bim? Quote

I got it at a local dealer about a year ago, maybe a bit longer. I spotted it in a box of recent arrivals. Let's just say the price quoted was extremely favorable. (OTOH, I've bought stuff from the same dealer that was not so favorable ). Mint sleeve and vinyl. The performance is outstanding. I wonder if it will make it onto CD someday. Quote

I just picked up my copy at the Baltimore show. How do you like it? It seemed from your comment in the Live Music thread that you might be getting more interested in free jazz/improv? Quote

I bought it as it was the only LP they were selling. Not that I am against CDs, but since I had heard none of the music being sold, I figured I'd grab the LP. It is fabulous. Having never heard of these guys before I had no idea what I was getting into. I love it. Really excellent. Edited March 31, 2014 by Ed Swinnich Quote

I bought a copy of the double CD, "PISA 1980 IMPROVISORS SYMPOSIUM" from Evan Parker at a NYC concert. Still need to give it a spin. So clearly some great music played there. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 I regret selling those Schlippenbach Lps on Po Torch...used to have them all. In leaner times I needed the money; kept most of his FMP albums though. I just finished "three nails left" inspired by this thread...have not played this in ages and it's a great album too. Currently: Richard Beirach "methuselah" (trio, japan) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 And now: Jan Garbarek "dansere" (ECM/trio, Japan). One of my favorite Garbarek albums with the brilliant Bobo Stenson and one of the best rhythm sections ever IMHO. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) That is the only Schlippenbach group LP I've never had. Actually had bad luck trying to buy a copy - including one copy broken in the mail - so I may have to just sit this one out! Edited March 31, 2014 by clifford_thornton Quote

Leeway Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 LOST IN L.A. - Bobby Bradford and the Mo'Tet: Bradford (cornet), James Kousakis (as), Roberto Miguel Miranda (b), Marl Dresser (b), Sherman Ferguson (d). Does anyone know anything about James Kousakis? This appears to be the only record he appears on; rather unusual for someone playing with this type of ensemble. He seems to have Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/people/James-Kousakis/100002298000454 For me, his playing is the weakest part of that record. I think that might be the son. Looks a little too young based on the photo on the back of the jacket, and the 1981 recording date. But I agree with your assessment. That was why I was kind of wondering who or how someone with so little--actually none-- recording experience could be selected to play with veteran musicians. I might ask Bobby Bradford when I see him this week. I asked Bobby Bradford about it at the Baltimore concert. He told me that Kousakis was a student of his and played gigs in the Pasadena area. However he subsequently joined his father's hamburger restaurant, and then later opened his own restaurant. Bobby thought he still does gigs in the Pasadena area, usually backing up a female singer.
