With Gary Peacock and Masabumi Kikuchi...have not played this in years..have always loved the cover. yes, lovely cover. Music is marvellous. The fact that itwas Peacock and Kikuchi was one of the main deciders for purchase. I just wish I could read the Japanese insert notes Edited March 19, 2014 by mjazzg Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Hank Mobley - Soul Station (Music Matters) New 33 rpm reissue series. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Hank Mobley - Soul Station (Music Matters) New 33 rpm reissue series. Kevin how is this? Does it sound really nice? I have the "blue train" and "idle moments" music matters 33rpm reissues and love those but my XRCD of "soul station" sounds so good I'm a bit on the fence as to whether I should get this vinyl? Quote

I have the "blue train" and "idle moments" music matters 33rpm reissues and love those but my XRCD of "soul station" sounds so good I'm a bit on the fence as to whether I should get this vinyl? I have the XRCD, the Ron McMaster CD, the RVG CD, the Classic Records mono LP & the King (Japan) LP. I used to own the 1995 LP. This new Music Matters LP is very, very nice. It's the best vinyl version I've heard. Better than the XRCD? Maybe. But certainly not as convenient. If you like vinyl, you won't be disappointed with this one. I bought this new Music Matters LP because I subscribed to the whole series. So far, I haven't been disappointed. In fact, I'm now playing Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue (Music Matters). This is a beautiful-sounding hunk of vinyl. Very quiet vinyl (needed with this late night music) with a "you are there" sound. I am very glad I got this. I am going to compare it to my Van Gelder pressing next. Quote
paul secor Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Norman Granz Presents J.A.T.P. in Europe (Verve Japan) Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 So now I'm spinning Kenny Burrell's "Midnight Blue" cut by RVG (dark blue Liberty pressing). A very different presentation. The mids are jacked up on this version compared to the Music Matters version I just spun. I suppose a case could be made for each version. My old ears seem to like a little added EQ on the top but the Music Matters version has a better late night feel. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 Tal Farlow - The Tal Farlow Album (Verve Japan). 1981 pressing that I found sealed in the used bins. Nice clean picking. Quote
paul secor Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 Roy Eldridge + Howard McGhee (Vogue Japan) Couldn't find an image. Roy and Claude Bolling blowing on "Wild Man Blues" and "Fireworks" is fine stuff. Quote
JSngry Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 When I take my glasses off, Raymond Scott looks enough like Ross Perot that I can pretend I'm listening to a Ross Perot record, and then it's funny and fun alike. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 Well Kevin I will most likely cave in and buy that Mobley MM lp along with the Burell. Darn it...and here back in January I figured I would only buy maybe 3 or 4 of the 12 titles haha. Currently spinning: Masahiko Togashi/Mototeru Takagi "isolation" (Columbia, Japan) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 And just finished: Azimuth "the touchstone" (ECM, Germany) Philip Glass "music in 12 parts pts.1 & 2" (Caroline, UK)....really enjoying this...now I'm wishing I had the box set with extra material! Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 The Curtis Peagler 4 - I'll Be Around (Pablo). This is a nice enough date and I really can't complain about a record with Billy Higgins behind the drum kit. Quote
