Homefromtheforest Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 Rendell/Carr Quintet 'Dusk Fire' (UK Columbia, mono) Lovely album! I just have the Japanese pressing on Philips but it's in stereo and not a single crack or pop to be heard so I won't complain too much Quote

sidewinder Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) Rendell/Carr Quintet 'Dusk Fire' (UK Columbia, mono) Lovely album! I just have the Japanese pressing on Philips but it's in stereo and not a single crack or pop to be heard so I won't complain too much Never heard a copy of the the Japanese reissue LP - only the BGO CD, which sounds pretty good to my ears. Fortunately, this copy was bought before prices hit the stratosphere. Edited February 16, 2014 by sidewinder Quote
BillF Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 The UK London issue. I had this at one time. Never seen that one before, but I used to have that fine looking Brilliant Corners on London - till I lent it to someone. Quote

Leeway Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 The UK London issue. I had this at one time. I like the US version because I enjoy seeing contemporary pictures of jazz players, here Monk and Mulligan. They are sort of erased from the UK version (I wonder why, but it is interesting to see how the cover varies, so thanks indeed for posting it). Along with the question: Who benefited most from this meet-up?, one could have an interesting little contest: "Please provide a caption for this photo (on the US edition)." Clearly something is being discussed; seems like Monk is putting something forth and Mulligan is considering it. Quote
blind-blake Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 Vinyl probably would not be financially wise. Starting your label was not financially wise. But we're glad you did. I'd buy the vinyl reissue. Love the cover. Quote

Leeway Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 THE EMPTY FOXHOLE - Ornette Coleman (as, tp, vn), Charlie Haden (b), Ornette Denardo Coleman (d). Blue Note LP ("Van Gelder" in the run-off). Quote

Leeway Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) THINK! - Lonnie Smith (organ), Lee Morgan (tp), David Newman (ts), Melvin Sparks (g), Marion Booker Jr (d), Latin percussionists. Blue Note LP reissue. Funky, but coolly hipster too. Edited February 17, 2014 by Leeway Quote
Leeway Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 AFRO-DESIA - Lonnie Smith, et al. Including a young Joe Lovano(!). Groove Merchant LP. Funky, soulful, boppish - a cool album. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) Red Rodney - The 3 R's (Muse). This sounds a bit tired which is weird 'cause it's a killer band. Red Rodney in particular sounds pretty weak. Roland Hanna's piano/keyboard sound is rinky-dink and George Duvivier's bass is recorded in that typical late 70's/early 80's twangy style. It might be why it wasn't released right away. The funny thing is, I bought this record mainly because Malcolm Addey was the recording engineer. I guess he got better with time? EDIT: AM I the only one who found it funny that a schoolboard has the band listed with improper capitalization? Edited February 17, 2014 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
JSngry Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 What's the deal with that one, especially (but not only) relative to the label? Surely not recorded in the stockroom?!?!?!? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 "Recorded at Contemporary's studio in Los Angeles. Sound by Roy DuNann & Howard Holzer." Quote
JSngry Posted February 17, 2014 Report Posted February 17, 2014 So, stockroom! Did Contemporary do a "classical" "series" for a little bit, or was this a one-off, more or less? Quote
