jeffcrom Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 JImmy Heath - Jimmy (Muse). I'm grateful to felser for introducing me to this surprising album in BFT 115. (This is a Muse reissue of the original Cobblestone LP.) Quote

jeffcrom Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 Nippon Gagaku Kai - Gagaku: Ancient Japanese Court Music (Everest). Gagaku is reputedly the oldest more-or-less-unchanged musical tradition in the world. I had never heard of "the music of a thousand autumns" until I visited Kyoto in 2006. On that trip I heard three performances of gagaku, or rather, two performances and a rehearsal. The rehearsal was the most memorable. My wife and I visited Atawa Shrine at dusk, and were looking around the grounds when a gagaku ensemble started rehearsing inside the building. We sat on a bench as it got darker and darker, with this ancient music filling the courtyard. Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 Onzy Matthews - Blues with a Touch of Elegance (Capitol stereo). Really enjoying Curtis Amy's soprano on "I Should Care," notwithstanding the fact that he's slightly out of tune. Quote
tomatamot Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 My today vinyl score: Benjamin Herman - Cafe Solo. ( + MUSIC FROM THE SOURCE: Cecil McBee, with Chico Freeman, Joe Gardner, Dennis Moorman, Steve McCall, Don Moye. Inner City. ) Quote
Leeway Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 Manfred Schoof Quintet, SCALES. ECM. A bit too ECM-ish, or I'd give it high marks. Michel Pilz plays a nice bass clarinet. Quote
Leeway Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 Just about everybody in West Coast Jazz is on this one: Discovery LP. Quote
Leeway Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) Back to East Coast. New York Art Quartet. Get Back LP. I would love to have their MOHAWK LP on Fontana. Has anyone had a chance to check out the Triplepoint 5LP box of the NYAQ? Or better, does anyone own it? Edited November 21, 2013 by Leeway Quote

Leeway Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 It's discussed a bit here: Clifford's review here: http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD42/PoD42Artmosis.html Thanks! I ran a search here but of course failed to turn it up . I'd love to have the box but that price is the hurdle. Ditto the Cecil album. If NYAQ was $75 cheaper I would have bought it already, but this seems like jumping the shark. Anyway, not absolutely closing the door. Now playing: Quote

(ECM, Germany)..interesting session featuring one of my favorite drummers, Jon Christensen, with Indian musicians and next: Eric Dolphy "Live at the Five Spot vol.1" (Prestige, Japan)..looking forward to hearing how this compares with my 70s Prestige USA 3 LP box ("The Great Concert of Eric Dolphy") in terms of sound/pressing quality... Leeway Posted November 22, 2013 Report Posted November 22, 2013 Hearing Braxton on contrabass clarinet is an awesome experience. Braxton and Teitelbaum teamed up again on "Open Aspects '82" on hat Hut (2LP). Teitelbaum's performance there really impressed me. Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 23, 2013 Report Posted November 23, 2013 Mundell Lowe - Porgy & Bess (RCA Camden stereo). A nice one, with Ben Webster and Art Farmer, among others. Recording for this one began on July 16, 1958; Miles and Gil went into the studio to start on their version six days later. Quote
