The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Johnny Hammond Smith - Higher Ground (Kudu). I've been on the lookout for this album since The Magnificent Goldberg posted his Johnny Hammond survey, and I found a copy today. I'm not sure I'll ever like it as much as he does, but any album with a Joe Henderson solo on every track is a good thing. (Hope you've got Freddie Roach's 'Brown sugar' too.) MG Quote

colinmce Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Is that from the same Ronnie Scott's engagement as the PAUSA album? Quote
jeffcrom Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Is that from the same Ronnie Scott's engagement as the PAUSA album? It's from two months earlier - March 15, 1976 at the Shaw Theater in London. I don't know if these gigs bookended a long European tour or whether they were separate trips. Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 1, 2013 Report Posted August 1, 2013 Steve Lacy - Hocus-Pocus (Lome Armé/Les Disques Du Crépuscule). Book "H" of Practitioners, Lacy's collections of etudes he wrote for himself. He said that the idea was for them to be the kind of thing he usually wrote, but harder. As a saxophonist who pulls these off the shelf to practice every once in a while, I can confirm that they're tough. Quote

paul secor Posted August 1, 2013 Report Posted August 1, 2013 Charlie Haden: Silence (Soul Note) I've read at least a couple of put downs of Chet Baker's playing on this record but, to my ears at least, he sounds true to himself and the feeling is there. (And I'm not a Chet Baker fanatic.) Quote

clifford_thornton Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 I may incur wrath from certain board members when I say it, but: Now THAT is a rare pressing. The cover looks wonderful. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 I'm listening to silence.. All the records are packed into boxes..as is everything else...big move this weekend! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 Yes, moving is hell on wheels. MG Quote
paul secor Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 It is, but it also gives you the ideal chance to go through your stuff and get rid of things you think you need and want but probably don't. Quote

Yes, it does give you the CHANCE. We moved in 2005 and still haven't. MG Haha. Yes I see the opportunity but I ended up pretty much putting everything in boxes thinking "I'll deal with this in the new place"! Having a one year old limits the time to sort through stuff as well... Thank God for wine boxes! Great for moving records... Quote
paul secor Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 It's been a few years since I listened to that one. Have good memories of it, and it's time for another listen. Thanks for the reminder. Quote
