Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 10, 2013 Report Posted June 10, 2013 Louis Smith - Prancin' (SteepleChase). I found this sealed in a used bin and when I saw Smith, Junior Cook, Roland Hanna, Sam Jones & Billy Hart filling out the band, I figured this couldn't be too bad. I was right. Quote
Clunky Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) Buddy Terry ---"Awareness"----(Mainstream ) 70s very fine date, the band sound rehearsed and storm through a modal sounding set with fusion touches and some congas for good measure.Nicest Mainstream date I've heard. Terry did another date for Shad but I've not heard it. Edited June 11, 2013 by Clunky Quote

mjazzg Posted June 13, 2013 Report Posted June 13, 2013 Karl Berger - We are you [Trio, Japan] anyone know the connection between Calig and Trio? I'm assuming this LP was originally Calig released and licensed by Trio. Damn fine music either which way Quote

I'm assuming this LP was originally Calig released and licensed by Trio. Damn fine music either which way Yeah, it originally appeared on Calig with the following front cover (the Trio jacket is an image from the back that has been tinted). As far as licensing goes, I believe that Trio would have gotten the rights from Berger. No other Calig jazz LPs have Japanese pressings that I've seen, but Trio issued other Berger-related sessions dating to that time period (Muun Music Universe, Kalaparusha/Karl Berger LP). Interestingly, this Calig date came out on CD via Enja, which also released an excellent '70s Karl Berger session called With Silence. Quote

Thanks Clifford - I thought you might be the man for the enquiry. Does the Calig have extensive notes? there's lots of Japanese on my insert and I'm intrigued. I'm a fan of the Enja and the MMU LPs and would love to hear/afford the Kalaparusha Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 13, 2013 Report Posted June 13, 2013 The Kalaparusha is very rare and has been on my wants list for years. The Calig doesn't have any notes, just photos and personnel/titles. The shot of Kowald (inverted Hitler-'stache) is priceless. Quote
