Larry Kart Posted June 7, 2013 Report Posted June 7, 2013 Left out Pee Wee Moore, b. sax from the personnel on the above post. Can't believe I never heard this album before, though I knew of it. Fine charts by Golson and Gryce, fine solo work from Diz and Golson (deep in his L. Thompson/B. Webster bag), and sterling tasty drum work from Persip. Recorded NYC, December 17, 1957. Quote

colinmce Posted June 8, 2013 Report Posted June 8, 2013 Pretty sure. Came out later on a Fresh Sound CD. Several vocals by Al Jarreau, then studying at U of Iowa. Quote

J.J. showing that if Slide Hampton can play left-handed trombone, then so can he! Quote
Clunky Posted June 8, 2013 Report Posted June 8, 2013 Joe Gallivan-------Intercontinental Express------(Compendium Records) rec 1976 Fusion influenced big band with Charles Austin, Kenny Wheeler, Ronnie Scott and others. Pretty good , some curious vocals every now and then. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) Remember listening to Gallivan quite regularly on Charles Fox's BBC radio 3 programme back then - he was resident in the UK I think. Now spinning Charlie Rouse 'Bossa Nova Bacchanal' (BN NY USA, mono) Edited June 9, 2013 by sidewinder Quote

That's right, I think it was Jarreau that put the brake on this issue. I'm guessing that Monterose may have provided the tape to Spotlite. Quote

kh1958 Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 I just found my copy of the Billy Mitchell, so this was my first listen; I rather enjoyed it (in addition to Thad Jones, it features Kenny Burrell and Richard Wyands). This morning, Raymond Scott and His Orchestra Plays (MGM ten inch), and Gems of Jazz Volume 4 (Coleman Hawkins, Red Allen, Benny Carter) (Decca ten inch). Quote
John Tapscott Posted June 9, 2013 Report Posted June 9, 2013 Harold Land - Blue Mitchell Quintet Great record. Long-time favorite . Quote
