clifford_thornton Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 I've always liked the original cover image but never gave the LP a listen - I think because I'd heard it wasn't that good of a record. Only Phineas I own/have spent time with is either on Contemporary or New Jazz. One of the problems with the German WEA issue is the sound. The rhythm section is barely audible in spots. But I've not heard any other version to compare. I've not listened to the Contemporaries lately but my recollection is that they are preferable. How are the RCAs? Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 13, 2013 Report Posted April 13, 2013 Herb Ellis - Nothing But The Blues (Verve). I don't know why, but I really like this date. Great CD, OK LP. Lots of crackle. Am I the only one who can't seem to get decent Verve vinyl? Quote

clifford_thornton Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 I've run into a few early '60s Verve pressings that aren't all that great, keeping in mind that "Thesis" and "Fusion" aren't exactly loud music. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 Milford Graves - Babi - (IPS) Quote
jeffcrom Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 Milford Graves - Babi - (IPS) Used to have it, hated the saxophone playing, got rid of it. I wish I had kept it, if for no other reason than the incredible prices it fetches these days. After a very satisfying gig, I'm now playing: Art Ensemble of Chicago - People in Sorrow (Nessa) I've had this since back in the day - with the less legible yellow-on-white cover. It has effected me strongly every time I've played it. I don't know if this phrase makes any sense, but this is shockingly beautiful music. Quote

Doyle and Glover are sort of accompanists a la Sunny Morgan to Graves' rhythms, sounds, and theater.I don't remember what I paid for it, but it wasn't obscene and it's an M- copy. Quote

jazzbo Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 Just packed away the last of my vinyl, so no more listening to vinyl for me for a week or so. Quote

jazzbo Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 Thanks Allen, you're right, it's hell. Maybe by summer my life will be settled again; I really hate this limbo like zone. Move, sell my house, set up new place, in a jumble. ARGH. I'll be okay once the stereo is set up again! Quote
kh1958 Posted April 14, 2013 Report Posted April 14, 2013 The Legendary Buster Smith (Atlantic black label), and The Consummate Artistry of Ben Webster (Norgran). With a price tag from the University of Texas Coop, dated June of 1954, $4.95. The sound of this LP is so real and lifelike. A fantastic record. Herb Ellis - Nothing But The Blues (Verve). I don't know why, but I really like this date. Great CD, OK LP. Lots of crackle. Am I the only one who can't seem to get decent Verve vinyl? The Verve LPs that sound great in my experience are the trumpet label pressings, and the Verve T deep groove pressings. The ordinary non-deep groove Verve T pressings from the '60s and '70s (and I generally can't tell the difference) are okay, but nothing special in terms of sound. Quote
