Art Pepper - Smack Up - (Vogue UK mono)

Many possible titles could contend for Art's best early phase output. This would definitely be on my list...

Thank you, prompted me put on my copy, a 1973 US repress which only now do I realise has a different track listing, sharing just three tunes with the Victor.

I wonder what the thinking behind that was

I'd not realised this..a friend picked this up for me when he was record shopping in Tokyo a few weeks ago.

Even weirder is that there was a US CD version released in 2000 on the OJC label and it only duplicates the Japanese LP track listing and omits the alternate/extra tracks from the US LP when they could have easily fit on the CD.

If memory serves, the US Milestone LP has Out 'n In (which is the same as In 'n Out) instead of Black Narcissus, allegedly because the playing time of the Japanese LP exceeded what was acceptable for the US market. The OJC CD replicates the contents of the Milestone LP. Perhaps they (Orrin?) missed that there was another track when the CD reissue was produced, or maybe the actual session tapes were not available.

Sadao Watanabe----Round trip----(CBS/Sony) Japan issue 1970

Cracking album from the uneven Watanabe with an all star line up. Original sound is a little on the thin side but it's an excellent session from NYC July 1970.

Released on Vanguard in the US?

Sadao is way in over his head, god bless him. The trio renders him all but invisible. But the result is a stealth classic!

Yes, Vanguard in the US. I have the CBS version, strong album... and as far as Watanabe goes, I can think of several very good LPs he released in the 60s and 70s. Those with Charlie Mariano are at the top of the heap but others aren't far off.

That's right. Also, RVG remastered it for Milestone; I prefer the mix on the Victor original. It is a shame that no CD was produced with all available tracks in one package.
