See, I only saw him a few times, together with Jackie McLean on one occasion, but when I bought some records I think it was this and another, I love this because it has one of my all time favourites Sam Rivers. And the piano is very interesting. I think I love most the tune Catta, is it on this album ? On 2/12/2025 at 7:19 PM, HutchFan said: Now spinning: A desert-island disc. Expand it sure is. The thing I had with that tune is, it was such common ground when I learned jazz, everybody played it. And when I saw this record much much later I thought "wow, didn´t know it was written 10 years ago..... Because I heard it live with the same group......okay it was not George Coleman, it was Wayne Shorter so it was the VSOP I think, but I have seen George Coleman also live when he had made that record "Amsterdam News" or how it was titled. Expand It's all available to stream on BC now so not sure which two you have heard, probably the vocal with Neneh Cherry? First side is quite in the vein of that tune but no more vocals. Side 2 ups the tempo a bit and is less string laden but they're still there. Unsurprisingly Allen doesn't blow long and hard on this but he's definitely a major solo voice, especially on side 1 but so too are Michael Ray and Knoel Scott in places. Marshall wrote all but one track so his voice is there compositionally too. Sleeve notes say they aimed for it to be wide ranging across the styles he's played. It is, which for some might mean it feels a little disjointed. I don't. Quote
