More classic 60’s Freejazz. Marzette Watts and company. Great company that is: Byard Lancaster, Clifford Thornton, Henry Grimes, Jooney Booth, Karl Berger, Sonny Sharrock, J.C. Moses. Quote

I have an original but would love to get the Japanese with obi "just for fun." It's hard to come by. The Circle stuff was foundational for me and though all have done work elsewhere that I engage with more, I have a hard time cutting those three records loose. Quote

Apart from the ECM live set, what three are you talking about? I can think of several formulations of albums, both trio and quartet... Quote

I now see that only two other Discogs members own a copy. I feel pretty lucky then 😇 Quote

Yeah, you're right about the Blue Note material too, forgot about that -- scattered over two double album sets in various configurations under Corea's name. I like those. Quote
JSngry Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago Thanks. Those two...you were on it to have gotten them early on! Quote
corto maltese Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago I prefer Circle's German Concert over the Paris Concert and Gathering is my favourite Circle record. I also really like the quartet pieces on both Circulus albums and the odds and ends on "Circling In". Frankly, I never quite understood the recurring criticism that the group was no more than the sum of its parts. Of course, I can imagine the average Corea fan not liking Circle, but that will probably be equally true of some other early Corea records ("The Sun" is another favourite). 4 hours ago, Chuck Nessa said: Superb cover and wonderful music. That's interesting. Was that to do with when you first discovered the group? Quote
rostasi Posted 19 hours ago Report Posted 19 hours ago That Paris-Concert recording was my first intro - and I played it to death - but late '73 or so I saw and had to buy the previous Japanese ones. I remember, too, that after closing our record store and using up a good amount of credit that we had with a particular distributor, it was nice to find the Japanese LPs being reissued on CD on Corea's own label. I'll have to bring those out for a spin again... Quote
JSngry Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago I don't know that it's fair to criticize music that was not yet fully formed for being not yet fully formed. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted 2 hours ago Report Posted 2 hours ago Right. Well put. I like the Japanese LPs better. The Blue Note material is okay, but I think I preferred the trio tracks (like "Drone", as an example). It has been a while. The ECM felt a little stiffer to be honest, though at the time, when I was like 19-20, the parallel interests I had in Dolphy/Coltrane/Ayler/Cecil and Stockhausen/Berio/Webern found a strong footing in Circle. There's other Braxton I prefer, of course, but those records are pretty important. Will have to dig them out as it's been close to 25 years since they were on deck! Quote
