This is the only one I've kept, and agreed that they're not anything like what they should be.

More classic 60’s Freejazz. Marzette Watts and company. Great company that is: Byard Lancaster, Clifford Thornton, Henry Grimes, Jooney Booth, Karl Berger, Sonny Sharrock, J.C. Moses.

One of my favorite ESP jazz records. I have an original but would love to get the Japanese with obi "just for fun." It's hard to come by.

The Circle stuff was foundational for me and though all have done work elsewhere that I engage with more, I have a hard time cutting those three records loose.

Apart from the ECM live set, what three are you talking about? I can think of several formulations of albums, both trio and quartet...

Live in German Concert and Gathering, both issued on CBS-Sony in Japan only. Yeah, you're right about the Blue Note material too, forgot about that -- scattered over two double album sets in various configurations under Corea's name. I like those.

I prefer Circle's German Concert over the Paris Concert and Gathering is my favourite Circle record. I also really like the quartet pieces on both Circulus albums and the odds and ends on "Circling In".

Frankly, I never quite understood the recurring criticism that the group was no more than the sum of its parts. Of course, I can imagine the average Corea fan not liking Circle, but that will probably be equally true of some other early Corea records ("The Sun" is another favourite).

That's interesting. Was that to do with when you first discovered the group?

That Paris-Concert recording was my first intro - and I played it to death - but late '73 or so I saw and had to buy the previous Japanese ones. I remember, too, that after closing our record store and using up a good amount of credit that we had with a particular distributor, it was nice to find the Japanese LPs being reissued on CD on Corea's own label. I'll have to bring those out for a spin again...

I don't know that it's fair to criticize music that was not yet fully formed for being not yet fully formed.
