Clunky Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Making my way through the J section of my LPs - I came across three Leroy Jenkins sessions that I'd not played in years. All on Black Saint - Mixed, Lifelong Ambitions, Urban Blues. All very different. Currently spinning the duet with Muhal Richard Abrams. It's pretty raw and bleak sounding with both musician pretty exposed. Well worth hearing again. Quote

Team Andre3000? I've only had one listen myself and thought it had depth, deserving of more listens, but possibly not quite the full deal. Perhaps too in love with the calming potentialities of the flute. Maybe it gradually opens though. I like Hutchings a lot and this is an interesting facet to him. I've listened to it a few times already and like it a lot. Maybe I caught it at the right time as the warm, textural vibe of the album is a nice counterpoint to the crazy last month I've had working on a big project. I haven't given the Andre 3000 an open minded listen yet. I was a huge fan of Outkast since their first single in 1993 and Andre became one of my favourite rappers but I'm not ready to embrace his flute endeavours. Quote

The Andre 3000 thing was a joke, although it is interesting that they both made the same step at the same time. Quote

Pim Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 Hooray I own an original pressing. I think this one of Noah’s more accessible works. It’s one my favorites anyway. Quote

Evidently, according to Shabaka yesterday talking to GP, we're calling all this stuff Ambient Jazz. If it means the death of Spiritual Jazz as a catch all label I'm on board 5 hours ago, Pim said: Hooray I own an original pressing. I think this one of Noah’s more accessible works. The original sounds nice (for an ESP record). Now spinning: Quote

So I went to the Balcony on the other side. I assume it was for Andre 3000 and his entourage, who also was performing at the Festival. The theater was kept very dark throughout the concert, so you could not see who it was, and at the end of the concert when the lights came up, the VIPs had been safely escorted away (whew!). Up with Donald Byrd (Verve) Lou Donaldson, Musty Rusty (Cadet) Don Byas, MIdnight at Minton's (Onyx) Quote

I have tickets for Shabaka in London in a few weeks but the Barbican venue doesn't have boxes so Andre 3000 will have to slum it with the rest of us in the unlikelihood he turns up 😀 Quote
