The strange thing is I discovered Ellington (or his compositions) thru this LP, and thru Mingus (his Ellington Medley on "Mingus at Monterey").
In my case it was just that generation, those late 60´s early 70´s hipsters who were something like older brothers and sisters to me. Mingus and Monk were considered "cool" so that´s were I started to pick up the stuff.

But I admit it´s the wrong way chronologically.
I remember a name musician told me he had got into jazz thru his parents who heard some Ellington on radio and thats how it started, and when I confessed that I had "discovered" Ellington´s music thru listening to Mingus, he said "that´s also a good start". Well I didn´t have parents who would have listened to jazz on radio or so. I started from zero knowledge.

Nathan Davis Quartet - Rules Of Freedom [Hot House Records, UK 1986 RE]

Good record but poor pressing. Mole Jazz I think? Their Tubby Hayes reissues weren’t much good either.

Yes, ‘Hot House’ was put out I think by the people who ran Mole Jazz at the time. They also did a recording of Nathan Davis ‘London By Night’ so I guess this reissue was set up as a consequence.

I find that the Mole pressings tend to be rolled off quite a bit at the top end. The Tubbys are flawed in that respect - albeit very welcome when they came out.

I am kind of embarrassed that as a Canadian big band jazz buff, I knew nothing of this record until I saw it posted here. I know many of the musicians, of course, but I've never heard this recording. It completely escaped my attention.

Makoto Terashita with Harold Land - Topology. Though a 2 Lp edition is always a little too much for me this is one fine reissue!

Who is he? I always wondered why there were so few jazz / improv albums from the ICA.

A very good and probably important guitarist. His later stuff gets a bit too shreddy for me but anything up to 1972 works fine. Also, often features Harry Beckett which means you can't go wrong.  He also plays in Beckett's Joy Unlimited band.

Try 'Dragon Hill' for a good starter.  There's a couple of recent very good releases on Jazz In Britain which should be streamable.

As to why so few recordings form the ICA? I have no idea, too many Happenings instead
