one of those hidden treasures from the Japanese jazz scene. Takeo Moriyama is one hell of a drummer. His duets with Mal are also outstanding!

Big Bill Broonzy – Last Session Part 2R-5315879-1427466904-2249.jpg.4e58466f468222648c70f93b7afa2371.jpg

Found in a box of vinyl which belonged to my father in law, along with a ton of very average classical, trad jazz and, for some reason, about 16 copies of Missa Luba.

What a record this is.

All the tunes are very well known, often in forms that, to my ears, appear to have been clearly copped off this record. I'm sure I've heard all of these tunes ten times when seeing live blues.

Presumably it was just one of those records that you could buy in Britain in the mid sixties, so if you wanted to play blues it was one of the records you had to copy.

Anyway. What a collection. Beautiful. The vinyl is old and deep and crackly too.

Though I´m not really into west coast jazz (maybe I was too young for it or it was not much discussed in Austrian and Eastern European jazz circles of my generation), this is really an allstar summit. As I said in another thread, it seems that they had great music there at Aurex, but it never appeared here, or I never saw it in record shops.

Quite a surprise that west coast musicians play Bud´s "Un Poco Loco" if it is that tune, and I had to laugh reading the title "Popo" for the first track. We say "popo" for ass , with the accent on the last "o".

It's Smile. The reissue is excellent.

Just as good or even better than Egg Plants :)

I have originals of all those Moriyama LPs -- they're uniformly quite excellent. Don't forget "My Dear" on Union, a cheaper and very strong title.

Now:

Branca -- Sym. No. 3 (Gloria) -- Neutral orig
