Daniel A Posted January 20, 2022 Report Posted January 20, 2022 (edited) Just listening through some recent purchases from Japan. King pressing, though it has VAN GELDER stamp in the runout, so presumably they did use stampers from the US. Maybe I shouldn't say that The Singers Unlimited never sounded better than here, as this is the first or second album they did, but that's how it feels to me. A bit unusual to find an MPS album reissued on the Columbia imprint. I have also a German pressing, but wanted a spare copy as I am not happy with the remastering of this album on the "Magic Voices" 7 CD box. This one has some good early Cedar Walton. And I always like Jaspar. Edited January 20, 2022 by Daniel A Quote
sidewinder Posted January 20, 2022 Report Posted January 20, 2022 That JJ album is a good one (as are all of his Columbias). Quote

One performance that I can't get out my head is "The More I See You," the ending especially. Quote

That's good to hear. I only have this and two with Satoh, 'Canto Of Aries' and one I can't recall its title. I'm a bit wary of a MOR tendency that I have no evidence to support. Any pointers for others? Now onto this recent discovery. Some Billy Harper I didn't know about. One of the weirdest band names ever New York Saxophone Madness - Danjiri [CAC, Japan 1985] Quote

I have mostly listened to the early 70s ones, which are a mix of big band, funk and electric keyboards. Tsuchi no Ne and New Herd are my favourites I think. The first of those is streamable I think (土の音). Edited January 21, 2022 by Rabshakeh Quote

Great vocal group beside the Hi-Lo's (different sound) and my # 1 vocal group favorite "The Frosh" Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 21, 2022 Report Posted January 21, 2022 All the talk about Moodsville got me to pull out a few tonight... first up: Kenny Burrell - Bluesy Burrell (Moodsville MV-20). I have the blue Prestige label, not the green Moodsville one. Some crackles on side one but otherwise, OK for a spin. That was followed by Coleman Hawkins - Coleman Hawkins Plays Make Someone Happy From Do Re Mi (Moodsville MV-31). Quote

And I'm not going to the mat on this one, but I think it was originally a bolero, not a bossa? Glad they fixed that on subsequent releases! GREAT record, though! Quote
