I have it on a mid-70s Impulse Green label double with super thin vinyl so maybe I need an upgrade. That one is combined with ‘Mingus Plays Piano’. Edited December 5, 2021 by sidewinder Quote

sidewinder Posted December 6, 2021 Report Posted December 6, 2021 (edited) Oliver Nelson shoot-off between early US orange/black stereo and 1976 UK pressing put out by Anchor Records with US sleeve. The early US version sounds lovely - bags of RVG punch where it counts, excellent dynamics. The UK Anchor Records, which used the HMV tapes I think, sounds also very good indeed, albeit with less punch and a few more pressing glitches. Extremely musical though and benefited from an RCM spin. I was wondering if I ‘needed’ the new AP version and I guess the answer is probably no. My hunch is that the AP will sound not unlike the Anchor. Edited December 6, 2021 by sidewinder Quote

First impression of ‘Blues..’ is that it sounds amazing. Leaves the old Anchor version for dust. Likely my new ‘go to’ copy now. Sleeve quality superb too and at least up to Tone Poet standards. sidewinder Posted December 6, 2021 Report Posted December 6, 2021 (edited) Next up - Verdict - definitive issue, by far the best version of this classic I have heard (don’t have an original). Charlie Mariano never sounded better and the Spanish guitar sound is exquisite. Edited December 6, 2021 by sidewinder Quote

When the LP was originally released, I was in the fifth grade. Of course, I didn't hear it back then. I discovered the record a few years ago when I was working on my 70s jazz blog. It's good music. All four guys in the band were working for Mongo Santamaria at the time. I guess Jasmine was a side project. Quote
