mjazzg Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 (edited) First run through, onto LP2 side 1. Maupin on bass clarinet is almost worth the entry price alone. 19 minutes ago, HutchFan said: The way that term is used bothers me too. It's become so ubiquitous to be meaningless now I think Edited September 30, 2021 by mjazzg Quote
HutchFan Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 Now on my 'table: Les McCann - In San Francisco (Pacific Jazz) with Herbie Lewis & Ron Jefferson Quote
HutchFan Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 Next up: It's always fun to hear singers backed by Count Basie's big band. From the singer's point of view, it must've been like cruising down the road in a brand-new Cadillac. "New elegance, new excellence, new excitement!" Quote
HutchFan Posted September 30, 2021 Report Posted September 30, 2021 James Moody - Comin' on Strong (Argo, 1964) The best cut on this LP might be Moody's take on Sonny Rollins' "Sonnymoon for Two." Moody doesn't sound anything like Sonny, but one thing the two men have in common is their profound rhythmic sense. Seems like EVERYTHING they play is danceable. Quote

Because Basie was signed to Roulette and Tony to Columbia, the labels worked out a reciprocal deal for two records, one on each label. Both great. Quote
JSngry Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 There were two (sorta) Prysocka as well Quote
HutchFan Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 I know and love the Roulette record with Basie & Bennett. ... I'm not familiar with the Columbia LP. I should rectify that! 2 minutes ago, JSngry said: There were two (sorta) Prysocka as well What's the other one, Jim? Quote

I'm not familiar with the Columbia LP. I should rectify that! What's the other one, Jim? It was issued on Old Town, but Verve won the deal - there's a whole album on Verve, three tracks on Old Town. And the CD of the Verve album contains the three tracks that were on Old Town. So you don't have to go looking for another album unless you really want to buy vinyl, in which case It's real cheap on Discogs MG Quote
mjazzg Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Milt Jackson - And the Hip String Quartet [Verve Germany,1968) With this and my recent dive into James Moody I'm seeing the name Tom McIntosh a lot. I need to find out more about him Quote

Well, I said, "sorta", and that's exactly what it was, and even less of what it is... Prysock at the time of the Basie record was under contract to the Old Town label (and check out the many records he made there, please do!), so the reciprocation for his recordin on Verve,. besides him eventually getting a deal with them (and check out the many records he made there, please do!) was this album on Old Town: Three cuts with Basie, and if you say, HEY - those three are on the Verve CD, well, you'd be right, and the liner notes explain that, just more record company holdings bingo and such. But before that happened, you needed to get two different records on two different labels to hear the complete collaboration. But now you don't. But it's a mistake to ignore Arthur Prysock on Old Town. Settings can and do vary wildly, but that voice... Quote
HutchFan Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 NP: Richard "Groove" Holmes - Jazz Milestone Series (Pacific Jazz) MG, Jim - Thanks for the info on the other (sorta) Prysock-Basie LP. Since I have their Verve album on LP, I'll keep an eye out for Mr. Prysock and Guest on Old Town. Quote
