On this evidence that has been foolhardy. Any views on the other Columbia releases? Solo/Quartet on Contemporary and all of the Landmark releases are better choices. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 26, 2021 Report Posted September 26, 2021 Those Hutcherson Columbias seem to have passed me by too. Never heard them. Quote
JSngry Posted September 26, 2021 Report Posted September 26, 2021 I like all of the Hutcherson Columbias (there were only three). They are all "produced" and are obviously "targeted", but...they are all quite well done, and no false tones are struck. And everybody plays, there's none of this "holding back" that such things often ended up with. Fusion? Reall? Or maybe just letting what was already there step into the mainstream spotlight? I mean, everybody should know about "Un Poco Loco", should they not? Still do not pass on the aforementioned Solo/Quartet on Contemporary. It is a true masterpiece. Quote

Thanks, I like that description of them. I will definitely been checking the other two. Already have 'Solo/Quartet' which is very special, I agree Edited September 26, 2021 by mjazzg Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 Joy was a strange little label though. A budget subsidiary of President records, set up after President had got rights to Vee-Jay material. But I see the Vee-Jay version also has Buhaina on the sleeve. A compilation... Well, we all don't know as much as we think we know. MG Quote
JSngry Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 A contractual workaround, perhaps. Quote

JSngry Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 The later (on both Novus & WB) dates tend to be a bit "produced", but the last dates (on IPO) are badass. But - do not hesitate to go backwards as well. The late-40s/early 50s stuff are magnificent. https://jamesmoody.com/discography/ Quote

I have one of Moody's Novus records, Something Special. It's very good -- but, IMO, it's not quite on the same level as those prime years. From Moody's later years, my favorite very well could be Our Delight with Hank Jones on IPO. Quote
