Gardening this afternoon, but I DID rip one this morning.

Gene Russell - Takin' care of business - Dot 1966

Takin' Care Of Business album cover

Lots of reasons to prefer Les McCann, and this is one of them :)

But I can still listen occasionally.

Interesting.  I didn't know about this "pre-Black Jazz" Gene Russell LP.  :tup

Doesn't appear to be in Discogs.

It's almost like Joe did the Contemporary album, and then for whatever reason and said fuck this, I'mma gonna make my own record and see what happens.

Yep.  And it worked really well!

Speaking of RC with Tony, this LP is now spinning on my 'table...

I almost picked this album for my 70s survey.  Love it.

It is. That's where I got the photo of the sleeve.

You have to search for 'The Gene Russell Trio', not Gene Russell. So you have to know about it to find it :)

Discogs sometimes adds a layer of complexity that is not necessarily necessary: https://www.discogs.com/artist/4875690-The-Gene-Russell-Trio

There's also this one:

and if you're thinking that either one of these might not be an immediate priority to discover,,,,I'd concur with that, 100%!

Heh.  I hear you.  Plenty of other good, off-the-beaten-path stuff out there that should take priority, eh?

Another spin of the Columbia 2-eye mono

I had that LP as well as a 6 eye stereo copy. I preferred the stereo LP. Then I managed to pick up a copy of the Classic Records 33 RPM LP (don't know if it is 180 or 200 gram). It sounded much better to my ears (at the time).

I would bite the bullet and walk away from Cleanhead on this one because of the GBD. But WILLIE COOK?!?!?!?!?! :alien::ph34r::blink::excited:

Cook plays well, sounds good!  Apparently, he was in Basie's big band when they made this small-group record, so Granz invited Cook to the session. Voilà.

Also, what is "GBD"?  I Googled it, and I don't think you're referring to the "Global Burden of Disease."  ;)

Willie Cook on the Basie gig...wow. Does it say what he had been up to before then?

Nope. No mention of that. ... There's just a passing reference to Cook being with Basie's band in Vegas, where they made the record.

It's party time with Jesse Powell - Trusound (DG) 1961, ripped this afternoon.

Ruppli's discographical info is fucked up (and Lord copied it). I probably noticed this when I bought it in '79, but forgot over the past 42 years.

So there.

On TruSound, I only have King Curtis, Old Gold and Jimmy Neely Trio, Miserlou.

The Japanese Prestige discography says the Jesse Powell was recorded on three dates in 1961, with overlapping but not identical personel.

Yeah, but when you listen to the tracks from the first date (12 Sep '61), you can't hear Albert Winston on organ, though you CAN hear Ray Barretto on conga, and when you listen to one of the sessions on which Winston's not supposed to be present, there he is, playing organ. Or maybe someone else is. And on that session, William Curtis (who I assume is Bill Curtis who later played drums with the Fatback Band) is down as playing bass and there's supposed to be no drummer. Only there is.

Er...
