Saw Tate with Harry Edison andĀ Urbie Green back in 1991/92 I think. Venue was NY Town Hall - the stage of which was still recognisable to me from the Monk LP cover.

I saw him much earlier - in 1959 in a Buck Clayton-led group with Emmett Berry, Dickie Wells and Earl Warren. Venue: St George's Hall, Bradford.

Really ? This must have been quite late in Harry EdisonĀ“s career. I saw him with Jaws in 1978. So, in 92 he must have been already 77 years old.

Yes, he was already getting on by then -Ā but was soloing quite nicely still. His sound of course remained totally unique.

The other half of the bill had Illinois Jacquet and his orchestra. That one had the feet tapping more than a bit.

The other new Decca reissue, 2LP set. Fantastic selection, first track from ā€˜Windmill Tilterā€™ in Ā superior sound to the BGO CD reissue. Also comes with a very comprehensive booklet essay.Ā :tup

Don Rendell ā€˜Space Walkā€™ from this series also a winner. Augurs well...

Back with an early spin of this marvellous double. A reminder of just how good Alan Skidmoreā€™s groups are/is, what a rhythm section with John Taylor, Chris Laurence, Tony Oxley. Time to dig out ā€˜Once Upon A Timeā€™ again on Deram/Nova.

Art Pepper - Winter Moon (Galaxy)

Aha! Very fond memories of this. That was one of the first Jazz albums I ever heard and connected with. My entry point was looking for music that sounded like the orchestrated music on earlier Tom Waits albums. Not sure how close this was but it worked

Yusef Lateef - 10 Years Hence [Atlantic, 1975]

First listen to a new arrival.Ā  Always room for more of Lateef's flute, and other horns, playing in this house. Albert Heath laying down some very serious rhythms.

Love that. We all come to jazzĀ from different places, but any pathway that leads to new discoveriesĀ is a good one!Ā  :)

Never got into Yusefā€™s Atlantic material. Too much chug-a-chug guitar riffing from the likes of CornelĀ Dupree et al for me. The CTIs are even worse. Big fan though of his Savoy/Verve/Riverside/Impulse stuff. His very late recordings e.g. with the Belmondos are enjoyable too. I feel that in that middle period he lost his way somewhat. Of course, he wasnā€™t the only one around that time.

I tend to agree.Ā  This is on the right side of that line, no guitar.Ā However it does feature Lateef or someone else making the most extraordinary vocal noise which can only be described as a distressed sheep on side 4.

Also, big thumbs up for the later stuff with Adam Rudolph and others on YAL label

Ā Not heard the Rudolph stuff, will have to check it out. I did see Lateef live with the Belmondo project, very late in life and that was memorable.Ā Even watching him pack his array of instruments away was a treat.
