sidewinder Posted July 16, 2021 Report Posted July 16, 2021 Saw Tate with Harry Edison andĀ Urbie Green back in 1991/92 I think. Venue was NY Town Hall - the stage of which was still recognisable to me from the Monk LP cover. Quote

So, in 92 he must have been already 77 years old. Quote

The other half of the bill had Illinois Jacquet and his orchestra. That one had the feet tapping more than a bit. Edited July 16, 2021 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted July 17, 2021 Report Posted July 17, 2021 (edited) The other new Decca reissue, 2LP set. Rabshakeh Posted July 17, 2021 Report Posted July 17, 2021 (edited) Currently spinning this one to check, in the interests of science, whetherĀ @Teasing the KoreanĀ 's description is accurate.Ā It's the Italian Barclay issue from 1979, which has a cover that I prefer to the original and sounds much the same. sidewinder Posted July 18, 2021 Report Posted July 18, 2021 Back with an early spin of this marvellous double. A reminder of just how good Alan Skidmoreās groups are/is, what a rhythm section with John Taylor, Chris Laurence, Tony Oxley. Time to dig out āOnce Upon A Timeā again on Deram/Nova. Quote

That was one of the first Jazz albums I ever heard and connected with. My entry point was looking for music that sounded like the orchestrated music on earlier Tom Waits albums. mjazzg Posted July 18, 2021 Report Posted July 18, 2021 Yusef Lateef - 10 Years Hence [Atlantic, 1975] First listen to a new arrival.Ā Always room for more of Lateef's flute, and other horns, playing in this house. Albert Heath laying down some very serious rhythms. Quote

The CTIs are even worse. Big fan though of his Savoy/Verve/Riverside/Impulse stuff. His very late recordings e.g. with the Belmondos are enjoyable too. I feel that in that middle period he lost his way somewhat. Of course, he wasnāt the only one around that time. Edited July 18, 2021 by sidewinder Quote

I tend to agree.Ā This is on the right side of that line, no guitar.Ā However it does feature Lateef or someone else making the most extraordinary vocal noise which can only be described as a distressed sheep on side 4.
