I have a big soft spot for 'Live At The East' and that along with 'Karma' are probbaly my two favourites, today 'Tauhid' is cued up next. Since the Floating Points album, which I love, I've been on a mission to plug the gaps in my Pharoah Impulse leader-date vinyl collection. Complete now. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted April 11, 2021 Report Posted April 11, 2021 I find my reissue LP copy of Tauhid is very muddy when compared to the digital or CD versions. Sonny Sharrock is submerged complely. How does the original compare? Quote
mjazzg Posted April 11, 2021 Report Posted April 11, 2021 (edited) It sounded good earlier, will listen again over the next day or two edit to add: listening again now and I don't really detect muddiness. Sharrock isn't high in the ensemble mix at times and that mix is quite dense. Burrell's the biggest loser in the mix as I'm hearing it. Edited April 11, 2021 by mjazzg Quote

I'm no way near the Harper afficionado that some of our fellow board members are but to my ears this is a storming set, good some quality and production values. Can't believe anyone who likes Harper would be disappointed. Some may baulk at the short playing time 20:16 and 15:29. The notes mention that the set was completed by a 20' 'Priestess' so I do wonder why they went for the shorter 'Croquet Ballet' for side 2. I'm glad they did; it's a particularly strong performance. I have the impression that you can hear that the quintet is more familiar with this piece, which they recorded a few days earlier in the studio, than with "Cry Of Hunger". Anyway, an excellent release from Sam. Edited April 14, 2021 by corto maltese Quote

Pretty good stuff -- if you're into 80s-ish Brazilian fusion. In Brazil, the same music was issued as High Life (not in Slagle's name) on Elektra Musician. If you'd like to give it a listen... The Brazilian cover is less garish, no? Edited April 15, 2021 by HutchFan Quote
Gheorghe Posted April 15, 2021 Report Posted April 15, 2021 A wonderful album, I love those Freddie Redd compositions. Above all, "The Thespian". That beautiful rubato playing of the theme with Chambers bowing the bass , and that that break and the them played fast. And Jackie McLean and Tina Brooks are wonderful. Freddie Redd´s style is very interesting. He got his own style, I like it. Quote
