HutchFan Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 (edited) James Newton - Luella (Gramavision, 1984) Flute – James Newton Vibraphone – Jay Hoggard Violin – Gayle Dixon, John Blake Cello – Abdul Wadud Piano – Kenny Kirkland Bass – Cecil McBee Drums – Billy Hart Somebody was asking about "favorite jazz flute records" elsewhere on the board. My answer: This one! Mostly because Luella is so much MORE than just that. Edited February 24, 2021 by HutchFan Quote
JSngry Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 Gramavision used to be a player. Plenty of quality catalog. Quote

JSngry Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 And then they didn't. Seemed like they moved away from a well-rounded(ish) catalog and went more into Scofield/MMW type stuff at the expense of....other things. Nothing wrong with that, of course, those were still good records, but it made me less inclined to go there with them, as those other things either went elsewhere or else OTHER other things sprung up elsewhere. Once that happened, I didn't really give a hoot what was new on Gramavision. I knew it wasn't going to be James Newton or Bob Moses or Billy Hart, so.. I'm sure they had their reasons, everybody does. Quote

Pim Posted February 26, 2021 Report Posted February 26, 2021 2016 International Phonograph. Sounds amazing! Quote
HutchFan Posted February 26, 2021 Report Posted February 26, 2021 Martial Solal - Bluesine (Soul Note, 1983) solo piano Such spontaneous and eloquent thinking aloud on the piano. With Solal, even a warhorse like "Round Midnight" is fresh as morning dew. Quote

Tends to fly under the radar I think I was reading about Ondas when I gave that LP a spin. Turns out that it's one of Manfred Eicher's favorites as well. In an interview, he said that he listens to Nock's record regularly to this day. When I read that, I was sort of surprised that Nock never made another record for ECM. I wonder why. Quote

Pim Posted February 27, 2021 Report Posted February 27, 2021 All of these Louis Hayes Muse sessions are so freakin' good. This is another great one but probably my least favorite. The Real Thing and Ichi Ban are even better. But this one is very good too. And a good oppurtunity to hear Charles Davis in a prominent role (on baritone sax!) Quote
