First listen to the other Oliver Lake LP that I ordered:

Oliver Lake - Gallery (Gramavision, 1986)
with Geri Allen, Fred Hopkins, Pheeroan AkLaff, and (on one cut) Rasul Sidduk

Just as good as Impala.  Maybe even better.  Too soon to tell.

yeah, I like this one.

James Newton - Luella (Gramavision, 1984)

Flute – James Newton
Vibraphone – Jay Hoggard
Violin – Gayle Dixon, John Blake
Cello – Abdul Wadud
Piano – Kenny Kirkland
Bass – Cecil McBee
Drums – Billy Hart

Somebody was asking about "favorite jazz flute records" elsewhere on the board.  My answer: This one!

Mostly because Luella is so much MORE than just that.

And then they didn't. Seemed like they moved away from a well-rounded(ish) catalog and went more into Scofield/MMW type stuff at the expense of....other things. Nothing wrong with that, of course, those were still good records, but it made me less inclined to go there with them, as those other things either went elsewhere or else OTHER other things sprung up elsewhere. Once that happened, I didn't really give a hoot what was new on Gramavision. I knew it wasn't going to be James Newton or Bob Moses or Billy Hart, so..

I'm sure they had their reasons, everybody does.

Rich kid with money.

Wish more rich kids spent their money on making jazz records!  :P

Especially if the records they make are as good as LuellaCastles of Ghana, Oshumare, Impala, etc.

Un-rich folks can be irritated.

LOL!!!  :g

Damn straight to that too!

I started my label (at the request of Roscoe Mitchell and Lester Bowie) with $1500 in stock my grandfather left me. Everything else grew from that.

Then we owe both you and your grandfather a debt of gratitude.

Martial Solal - Bluesine (Soul Note, 1983)
solo piano

Such spontaneous and eloquent thinking aloud on the piano.  With Solal, even a warhorse like "Round Midnight" is fresh as morning dew.
