Lawrence Brown's All-Stars with Johnny Hodges - Inspired Abandon (Impulse!). I wonder how Hodges got co-billing when he only plays on two tunes? :) I don't know if it's my pressing or something else is going on, but the bass sounds different on this. Did Van Gelder switch bass mic'ing techniques by 1965? In general, I don't think he captures larger bands like this as well as he does smaller ones. There's certainly too much reverb. It sounds like the band is playing in an empty dance hall.

UK HMV green label, factory sample. Brit band including Tubby Hayes, side 1. US lineup with Shorty Rogers side 2. Stereo version.

Looking at the grey skies and the rain on the tarmac, I would hazard a guess that that shot was taken at the Heathrow end. :D

Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants, 1969 Prestige reissue, PRST 7560, cover labeled ELECTRONICALLY REMASTERED FOR STEREO.

I bought this LP in a yard sale last year, for a buck, didn't notice the off-putting ELECTRONICALLY designation, and was really surprised to hear it, because this record is proper MONO, not a fake STEREO, and in fact the sound on this LP is remarkably good. I don't know how they managed to squeeze over 30 minutes of music on one side, and almost 30 on the other, but the result is top topnotch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is probably the only way to get the whole December 24th, 1954 session on one disc. Grab one, if you see it. You won't be disappointed.

If it's got RVG in the deadwax, I've been told that he didn't like that rechanneled stuff so he sometimes ignored that directive.

Yeah, it's stamped VAN GELDER on both sides. The matrix numbers are PRST 7650 A and B. ST catalog prefix is for stereo, which this is not.

You'll get a kick out of the shrink wrap that's still on my copy. It's a got a JORDAN MARSH price sticker. 7.79...not cheap, in 1969.

$7.79 in 1969?? $1.79 maybe! :) I seem to remember rock LPs costing around $3.00 in the early 70's. I can't imagine a Miles reissue costing more than one of those those rock albums. Weren't many of these Prestige reissues budget releases?

Teddy Edwards - Nothin' But The Truth (Prestige). I somehow managed to end up with an RVG mono pressing. I'm not one of those mono fetishists. I'd actually prefer the stereo in most cases. I wonder why these guys cut the session so short? It's only 33 minutes long. BTW - the back cover has the wrong tune length for the track "But Beautiful". The back cover says 5:03 but the label correctly says 6:59.

Just finished - Tangerine Dream "Force Majeure", an LP I bought mainly because the title made me think of Eddie Izzard. :) It's typical TD music. Aural wallpaper.

Now playing... don't know what me pull it out... Neko Case "Middle Cyclone" on clear vinyl. Mastered loud as hell. Why do they do this on vinyl is beyond me.

Not unusual for Schlitten era Prestige LPs. Most of the ones I have are pretty short.

That can actually make them sound very nice. Less music on a 12" disc can possibly make for wider-spaced, deeper grooves.

I didn't realize this existed. I've often wondered why there was never a single cd release of the entire session.

Jimmy Smith - Christmas 64 (Verve). I have the stereo reissue. Not my favorite Christmas LP nor favorite Jimmy Smith date by any means. I'm glad I found this inexpensive LP because I wouldn't buy this on CD. Van Gelder's "large group reverb" pretty much ruins the sound on this. I have the sticker on mine too:

Hey - I even have the same punch hole in the same spot! :)

LP1 - sounding great, thankfully. One of the releases of the year for sure. The Bennink/Jacobs team is excellent.

LP2, Arnhem - Sonically obviously compromised but Sonny in incendiary form, Bennink wonderful. Very listenable, in a ‘Dean Benedetti’ sort of way. Love it !

I think that top one is one of the only Birds I don't have.  How is it?

It depends on your geek factor, but I find it fascinating.

Now moving up a decade or two.

High Geek factor here. Look forward to hearing it someday. (I'm only 77.)
