HutchFan Posted September 11, 2020 Report Posted September 11, 2020 Now spinning on my 'table: The Pee Wee Russell Quartet - New Groove (Columbia, 1963) Another LP from a recent dollar bin haul. It was covered in dust when I found it, but -- after a couple spins on the record vac -- it sounds great. The audio fidelity of the mono LP really is astonishing -- especially since I'd only heard the music previously via YouTube. (There aren't any production credits on the cover. Fred Plaut, I wonder?) ... Music-wise, it's not typical Pee Wee. The quartet is more reminiscent of a Mulligan piano-less group -- or Jimmy Giuffre with Bob Brookmeyer -- than anything you'd normally associate with Pee Wee. But it's always fun to hear Russell's clarinet -- in any setting. Quote

HutchFan Posted September 11, 2020 Report Posted September 11, 2020 Lambert, Hendricks & Ross - Sing a Song of Basie (MCA Impulse!; originally ABC Paramount) and Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow (Classic Jazz) Along with Bechet and Mezz, you get some low-down, dirty blues playing by piano man Sammy Price! Dan Gould Posted September 17, 2020 Report Posted September 17, 2020 Really strong straight up bop from a guy who is known for a few records with McGriff and more than a few on Pablo as last leader of Basie's reed section. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 17, 2020 Report Posted September 17, 2020 Sun Ra "Solar Myth Approach, Vols. 1 and 2" Corbett v. Dempsey 2 cd set, disc 1 Hard to describe how transformed this release is by the new mastering. . . it never sounded half this good before. Then on to a new fave, Marcela Mangebeira "Simples". . . a Brazilian singer doing bossa nova with new elements, not unlike Paul Morelenbaum has done this century as well. I totally dig this cd. Quote
