mjazzg Posted February 27, 2020 Report Posted February 27, 2020 Rashied Ali Quintet - First Time Out, Live At Slugs 1967 [Survival Records] One of those 'lost' recordings where the recording quality might suggest it should have remained so if it wasn't for the energy of the playing involved. Valuable archeology. On 25/02/2020 at 10:45 PM, HutchFan said: Originally released as Jeremy Steig - Energy (Capitol, 1971). I dig this. Steig had a strong run in the 70s. 'Duo Exchange', absolutely. 'Live At Slugs' dependent on your threshold for bootleg quality live recordings - I tend to find these can add to the enjoyment and this is a case in point. But if you're bothered by distant pianos (except when soloing - it's almost as if someone's moving the mic closer!), overly prominent drummers and horns fading in and out then don't go near it. To me it sounds like a live recording ESP rejected on the grounds of SQ . The music's terrific in most parts, warts 'n' all. Nicely packaged. Listening now to the new Charles Lloyd live recording '8', the polar opposite in SQ, gorgeous quality and beautiful music On 27/02/2020 at 5:57 PM, HutchFan said: You and me both. I've not heard it and didn't realise it was recorded at the same time until I read your blog, so now I'm tempted. Edited February 29, 2020 by mjazzg Quote
sidewinder Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 (edited) Thanks for that ! Shame these aren’t on CD - would prefer that if the audio quality is compromised. Edited February 29, 2020 by sidewinder Quote

If you do buy one or both do be prepared for the PayPal shenanigans mentioned in the other thread about them. It may be worth contacting HJ in advance and arranging to PayPal the funds directly rather than through their basket. Quote
Michael Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Currently spinning side one of "Spring" by Anthony Williams. Picked up this stereo copy last Friday at an amazing estate sale at a loft in downtown Pittsburgh. There were over 2000 LPs individually priced for sale. I'll start a thread elsewhere shortly. Quote
JSngry Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Reiner - Iron City, not Windy City. Blue Label, not Red Seal. SURPRISE!!! The debut recording? It says so. My ignorance, to be sure, but I was totally unaware of this record until finding it last weekend. You bet I snapped it up, and for less than a fin. Not in the best of conditions to be sure, but those old Masterwork LPs were built for the long haul. Not matter what the noise, the music always comes out on top, loud and (more or less) clear. It's on a few off-brand "historical label" CDs but that's it? That's a shame. Since RCA & Columbia are all the same company now, we COULD have both on a single release, and then history, as well as music, would be well-served. Oh well. Quote
JSngry Posted February 29, 2020 Report Posted February 29, 2020 Apparently NOT recorded at the Village Vanguard, boy do I feel stupid. Quote

jcam_44 Posted March 1, 2020 Report Posted March 1, 2020 (edited) recent pick up. such a wonderful line-up. The music is interesting and the pressing is immaculate. Bought off the strength of Sabir Mateen, Salim Washington and Alex Harding. Never heard of David Durrah but quite enjoyed his playing. Edited March 1, 2020 by jcam_44 Quote
sidewinder Posted March 1, 2020 Report Posted March 1, 2020 Very nice - Ben Webster with strings. Stan Tracey arrangements. Quote
JSngry Posted March 3, 2020 Report Posted March 3, 2020 I'm sure there was a reason to make this record? Quote

It´s interesting how this tune Expresses completely different moods depending wether you Play it as a slow ballad (It could happen to you) or as a brisk medium tempo (Fried Bananas). It´s strange but the very best Version of Fried Bananas, I mean Maybe one of the best Dex solos I ever heard is not on an LP of his own, but on that huge Montreux Summit (CBS All Stars 1977 ). Besides some grossly overproduced tunes that try to capture everything from straight ahead to funk, there is one Combo feature for Dexter, playing "Fried Bananas" and it really knocked me out..... never heard Dexter play better. The ‘Fried Bananas’ on side 1 of this LP is very good, Dexter is in good form. My favourite version is probably on the ‘Sophisticated Giant’ LP though. Bought that one as soon as it came out, around 1980. Quote
