I agree the Savoy twofer series was fantastic.  Regular visits to Mole Jazz secured most of the US issues.  Great music, nice pressings, good packaging and intelligent notes.  The single albums were excellent too.

Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker ... : Anthropology (Spotlite)

Fats and Bird get the billing, but the Ulanov Metronome All Star group is somewhat disappointing - too much mixing and matching of the musicians - although Bird does have a fine solo on Koko. I'm keeping this for the three Tadd Dameron tracks with Allen Eager and Wardell Gray doing some exciting blowing.

From Mark Gardner's liner notes: "Legend has it ... that Allen (Eager) and Bird once exchanged horns and blew a session which was recorded. The cat who recorded it wigged out on the subway and the tape was left on the train. Will it ever be found? Probably not but I bet it would be explosive listening.

It was issued allen_eager_land_of_oo-bla-dee.jpg

Thanks to Dr. Sunenblick and Chuck Nessa for getting this out there for all to hear. Perhaps not explosive listening, but certainly fascinating stuff.

Agreed - except for that guy playing pots and pans (drums?!) on the last track. :(

Mark Harvey Quartet - In Concert - (Bush, US)

Don't see that one every day!  I've never heard it..worth seeking out? Guess it's on some blog somewhere on the internet like everything else these days!

Now playing:

Atilla Zoller 4tet "the horizon beyond" (emarcy, DG mono). I've had this album for at least 20 years and have not played it in almost as long.  A shame..a really fascinating album!  Too many records..not enough time :(

Morgana King - Winter of My Discontent (Ascot). Could this 1964 album be the first full recorded recital of Alec Wilder songs? I think maybe so. It's pretty good, although Ms. King's style occasionally veers toward the overwrought. There are a few songs I've never heard anywhere else, though.  King is accompanied by a rhythm section (with a good guitarist), trombone, and a woodwind mutli-instrumentalist, none of whom are identified.
