It won't change the world but it's a good listen. I can't remember where I eventually tracked it down now - I'd also forgotten that it was your initial post that alerted me to it, thank you FWIW it is available as a download from Amazon for about 6 bucks. I might go that route even though I'm not really a downloading type. It's definitely worth that (if only to see if it's worth shelling more if you fall in love with it) Quote
Leeway Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 APPLE CORES - Sunny Murray & The Untouchable Factor. Philly Jazz LP. A lot more folks involved in this one that Charred Earth, and the production is (relatively) more sophisticated. I like Side 2 rather more, with Monette Sudler, Hamiet Bluiett, Arthur Blythe, Fred Hopkins, Abdul Zahir Batin, Sonny Brown, and Sunny Murray. Oddly I've never owned Apple Cores, though Charred Earth is pretty cool. It's the other way around for me - I picked Apple Cores out of the bins at an Atlanta record store when it was new. I read about Charred Earth back in the day, but have never seen a copy. And I like side one of Apple Cores more than Leeway - it's more conventional than you would expect from Murray, but with an edge. And hey - Frank Foster with Sunny Murray! I think "Apple Cores" turns up fairly often around here, but I've never seen "Charred Earth" until last week, when it turned up locally. I like "Charred Earth" because it has that DIY feel that I like in early free jazz. Whereas Side One of "Apple Cores" is a surprisingly polished production. I'm sort of allergic to the conventional, especially in this type of record. Side Two seems quite different. But both are cool records. Quote
Leeway Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 Another recent acquisition: 11th STREET FIRE SUITE: For Solo Alto Saxophone with Flute and Small Instrument Accompaniment in Five Movements. Luther Thomas (as, small instruments, recitation), Luther C. Petty (fl, small instruments). Creative Consciousness Records LP. Rec. Sept. 2, 1978. I've always dug the scene around the Human Arts Ensemble, so it was a thrill to pick up this Luther Thomas LP. It's very personal, intimate, and displays the essence of the free jazz sensibility. A Lark Ascending Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 There are times when Burton's sublime lyricism is called for and that's right now. I love everything about this album. Goodrick is right on the money throughout I love those 70s Burton ECMs. 'Ring' is my favourite. But just like with Carla Bley, find little to hold my attention after the 80s got going. Though I do like the Piazzolla Libertango disc I have of his from a few years' back. Quote

Homefromtheforest Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 Roswell Rudd "Blown Bone" (Philips, Japan)...a very varied session with Steve Lacy, Paul Motion, Enrico Rava, etc..always a fascinating listen each time I pull it off the shelf! Steve Lacy "The Wire" (Denon, Japan)...perhaps my favorite group Lacy record? The best version of "Esteem" in my opinion is on here. I paid an arm and a leg for this nearly 10 years ago but I don't regret a cent...an amazing album and if it were to be ever reissued on CD I'd be first in line to buy that too. Maybe it's because I'm also a big fan of Masahiko Togashi and alot of other Japanese free jazz, but this particular era of Steve Lacy(stalks, solo at mandara, etc) is probably my favorite. Jan Garbarek "Paths, Prints" (ECM, USA)...finally a record that doesn't get played very often but should be...even though I prefer the first few Garbarek outings on ECM this record has an all-star backing band of Bill Frisell, Eberhard Weber, and Jon Christensen. I'm not the biggest Bill Frisell fan in the world, but I have nearly everything Weber and Christensen have played on...first class musicians all the way! Quote

B. Clugston Posted February 27, 2014 Report Posted February 27, 2014 Anthony Braxton, Solo (Skopje) 1995. Really nice solo set from Braxton. It was supposed to be among the first Braxton House CDs, but never got issued until it appeared on overpriced vinyl 10 years ago.
