Chuck Nessa Posted July 10, 2013 Report Posted July 10, 2013 Reminded of the Bluebird lp reissues by the Benny Goodman thread I dug out the 16 Dorsey sides to see if I could make a nice disc featuring my old friend Bud Freeman and his friend Dave Tough. I decided Bud was short-changed and will skip the transfers. Quote
John Tapscott Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 (edited) Fine record. 1975 date with Gene Perla and Joe LaBarbera. Thompson plays vibes and piano (mostly piano). Edited July 11, 2013 by John Tapscott Quote
jeffcrom Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Benny Gooman in Moscow (RCA stereo). Because I'm suggestible, and because JSngry is right - this was a great band. Quote
brownie Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 (Verve France reissue) 'Exciting' is a major understatement! That band smoked... Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Kante Manfila & Sorry Bamba - Clash Mandingue - Djima (Oriki) Xalam - Apartheid - Encore This listen, I realised that one of my favourite vocalists, Souleymane Faye, sings on some of this. Never knew he was with this band. MG Quote
jeffcrom Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Barry Harris - Stay Right With It (Riverside). A nice late-seventies two-fer drawn from his 1960-61 Riverside sessions. Quote

paul secor Posted July 11, 2013 Report Posted July 11, 2013 Charlie Parker: Bird at the Roost Volume Three (Savoy Jazz) Hadn't listened to this in some time and had forgotten that Phil Schaap, who's listed as producer and also wrote the liner notes, managed to fill up the back (and part of the front) of the record jacket without writing anything about the music contained within. I checked Volumes one and two out of curiosity, and each of them is the same deal. It's hard to conceive of someone doing that, but I guess Phil's a different kind of cat and always has been. Quote

jeffcrom Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 MEV - United Patchwork - (Horo) Three thumbs up! (Wait, that can't be right....) Inspired by a 7/4 Facebook post: Anthony Braxton - Alto Saxophone Improvisations 1979 (Arista), sides three and four. Kind of brilliant. Quote

Been trying to find a semi-affordable copy (or at least not beat) copy of this for years - always try to go cheap on Horos. Finally paid up for a very clean one and it was well worth it. jeffcrom Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 MEV - United Patchwork - (Horo) Three thumbs up! (Wait, that can't be right....) Been trying to find a semi-affordable copy (or at least not beat) copy of this for years - always try to go cheap on Horos. Finally paid up for a very clean one and it was well worth it. United Patchwork is one of the ten or so albums I got in the online "Aldo Sinesio clearance sale" 15 years or so ago. I spent about $250, which is all I could afford at the time, and got some great records, including all three Sun Ra albums. By the time I felt I had recovered financially enough to buy another batch, the sale website had disappeared. Eronel by Steve Lacy was one of the albums that was already sold out, and I only found a copy I could afford about a year ago. The pressings are crappy, and the covers fall apart, but damn! I love my Horos. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 (edited) Nice trio. That Springboard LP is way underrated. Somehow I missed that Horo sale in 1998 or whenever - would have surely jumped on it at the time! Edited July 12, 2013 by clifford_thornton Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 GERM/Pierre Marietan - Keyboard Study 2 (Riley)/Initiative + Systemes (Marietan) - (BYG Actuel) got the Riley side going. Beautiful of course, though the pressing is a stinker. Quote
