Willis Jackson with Von Freeman - Lockin' Horns (Muse). When I was at the Jazz Record Mart in Chicago last week, they put this on the sound system right after Warne Marsh's All Music on Nessa. I bought it right off the turntable.

Agree this is a great session

I remember my old friend Bob Porter complaining about having to edit out all the Freeman (unaccompanied) codas. Bob just didn't "get" Von.

Panama Francis and His Savoy Sultans: Gettin' in the Groove (Black and Blue 2 LPs)

Nice set of jump/swing jazz played by some good musicians who didn't get much chance to be heard much by the time this was recorded (1979).

Doc Evans/Knocky Parker/Jax Lucas - Classic Jazz at Carleton (Soma). An excellent recital, recorded at my wife's alma mater, 30 years before she graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Two of the tunes here end up on Come to My Garden a few years later....

All told, and interesting album fow how things are done more than what things are done...Charles Stepney definitely had a vision.

Elliot Lawrence 'Music for Trapping' (Top Rank, mono)

One of the worst cover idea ever!

But the music is fine (with participations from Urbie Green, Hal McKusick, Zoot Sims and others...)

Dug this out because Kid Punch Miller was mentioned in the other thread. I've a hard time listening to this blast out. It's a poor recording with the trumpet almost distorting. Nice bunch of tunes. My copy is the British Esquire label, no idea who released this originally. The only other one I think I have with Miller is this Savoy. I'll spin it next.

My breakfast listening this morving, but on CD, with 2 nice binus cuts. I can't play LPs in the dining room, cos there's no turntable here. Anyway, I haven't got this on LP :D

Typed one handed, cos I was rolling a ciggy with the other! Not going to correct the mistakes though.

It's great--glad you dig it. I've been listening to more West Coast jazz than ever in the last year and this has jumped right to the top of my list.

Bunk Johnson - Early Bunk 1942-43 (Dan). A 1979 Japanese LP full of rare recordings, mostly American Music sides issued for the first time (with William Russell's cooperation). 33 years later, some of these tracks have been reissued on various CDs, but six of them have not been issued anywhere else, as far as I can tell.

New Orleans - Living Legends ( Riverside) mono DG- lovely mix of tracks captured by Chris A. Sound quality is superb, Emma Barrett and Annie Pavageau the vocalists on the first 2 tracks on side one are real shouters, not sure if this is typical for them. Very raw. I think the sides by Louis Cottrell are my favourites but it's a while since I listened to this.
