sidewinder Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 (edited) Just been watching the 'Magic Sun' B&W short on DVD. Looks as if it was from Sun Ra's 'Strange Strings' vintage around 1966 - art house inverse negative effects which must have seemed like totally from another planet back in the day. Musically very interesting, with prominent solo space to Marshall Allen and Walter Miller plus bags of reverb. Ronnie Boykins and Clifford Jarvis also in the lineup (looks like there's some inverse negative shots of Clifford drumming and some-one (Ra?) on that space-harp thingy, on the film). Michael Weiss Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 I've had this 8mm little reel of footage from Sun Ra's gig at the Bluebird in Bloomington, IN (1977) in my drawer for years. Gotta get it transferred! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 did u shoot it? silent footage? Quote

AndrewHill Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Thanks for the link. I'll be buying it! I didn't realize Transparency has already released over 20 Ra titles. If the mastering is as good as they are claiming, then it might be quite possible that this would be one of the cleanest transfers of Ra's music from this period, perhaps right up there with Black Myth/Out in Space. chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 so youre going in chronological order- thats good. but if you really wanna do it u gotta go back and listen to i believe the name was Clearence Williams- "CHOCOLATE AVENUE" is def. the title, Suns 1st publicaly recorded and released composition. its from **1929**. thats right you heard me. the same year the stock market crashed and pornos had girls doing sex acts that werent seen again until the 1990s. clarance williams or perhaps the recordlabel or publichsing house or i dolnt know screwed sun ra, and used his submitted song and didnt even tell him or pay him, and the story goes this was a big reason which spawned his lifelong distrust of the music industry and inspired him to go his own way, eg. el saturn records Quote
jostber Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 A new Sun Ra album is coming out soon - "Rocket Ship Rock": http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=4bfr2v46gj Issued by Norton, this is looking good. From a newsletter from Norton previously this year: • WATCH OUT FOR MUCK MUCK! Norton recently took a rocket ride into the vaults of El Saturn Research and arrived back on Earth with a motherlode of unissued early R&B, doo wop, soul and general weirdness featuring Sun Ra and his Arkestra backing a variety of artists. This series will be compiled on several Norton albums and singles including an entire disc by Yochanan (The Space Age Vocalist) backed by Sun Ra and his Arkestra featuring his demented Saturn 45 Muck Muck / Hot Skillet Mama and much more lunacy from yet another Norton turban headed star! These stupendous recordings include Yochanan-Rocket Ship Rock / Nu Sounds - The Second Stop Is Jupiter / Crystals - Honey In The Bee Box / Qualities - If I Only Hadn't Sinned / Ebah - I'm Gonna Unmask The Batman / Don (Dino) Dean - The Space Stroll / Sun Ra - I Am Strange / Cosmic Rays - Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie and many, many more. A pretty hot new single too! http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=r5c...%2Bra%2Bstrange Quote
jostber Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 A new Sun Ra reissue on Art Yard Records of a 1974 Saturn classic: Here is from the ReR newsletter: UN RA The Antique Blacks [£12] Artyard Another much sought after and long unavailable title recorded in 1974 with a smallish ensemble consisting (probably) of stalwarts Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Danny David, James Jacson, Akh Tal Ebah, Clifford Jarvis, Artakatune, and new electric guitarist, Sly, that was released on Saturn in the same year. This sounds like a studio recording, carefully thought out - most of the compositions appear only on this record (apart from versions of Nature’s God and Space is the Place), and include a chain of very interesting accompanied /interpolated) spoken texts: There is a Change in the Air, The Antique Blacks, The ridiculous “I” and the Cosmos “Me” - as well as a very long and scary coda to Space is the Place. Ra plays Rocksichord and Moog throughout (solo on track 7 and at the end of track 8). Theatrical and political; this is a fascinating release. Quote

kenny weir Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 This seems to duplicate a lot of the Evidence "The Singles" package. Is that now unavailable? Yes, that's what I figured, too. Even if there are alt takes involved, it's too much like the 2cd singles set for me - much as I love it. Quote
