John Tapscott Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 After thinking about it this morning, I MAY be able to afford one of these sets, but ONLY one. But honestly, I don't know which to get. I am leaning towards the Kelly/Chambers, but if members have a strong prefernce for the Morgan/Shorter, I may lean in that direction. Thanks. Quote
wesbed Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) Man, I can't offer any advice. It's difficult to choose between two 'good' things. As I view the poll, right now, it's running 50% for each set. Figures. Good luck, John Tapscott. Maybe skip the electric bill, like Soulstation1, and get both sets? The remastering and the packaging are EXCELLENT on both sets. Each set contains equally strong playing and large numbers of alternate takes. I do like the Frank Strozier set included in the Kelly/Chambers box. But, I also enjoy the terrific playing from Morgan and Shorter on Morgan/Shorter box. I progam my CD player to skip the alternate takes (when playing either of the Vee Jay boxes). Definitely, a predicament. Edited May 13, 2004 by wesbed Quote
jazzbo Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 I went with the Morgan Shorter. Just by a hair. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 I went with the Morgan Shorter. Just by a hair. Same here! And a thinning hair, at that... Quote
Eric Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) Morgan/Shorter, by a long shot. The alt takes on the Kelly tend to dilute my listening experience. Better to buy those sessions on individual CDs without all the extra takes. Edited May 13, 2004 by Eric Quote
Jazzmoose Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 I ordered both like a fool, but if I had been forced by sanity to choose only one AS I SHOULD HAVE, I'd have gone with the Shorter/Morgan, but only because of my somewhat dormant Lee Morgan trumpet fetish. Quote

You were not a fool, Jazzmoose. Both boxes are exuberant, sublime, stylish, luxurious, and tasty collections of music. I purchased both sets, too. I'm 'out' the extra money but I sure don't feel like a fool. Edited May 13, 2004 by wesbed Quote

The poll spread has widened considerably. Quote
LAL Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 In spite of an already depleted bank account, I ordered both sets. On first listen of the sets, I would go for the Kelly/Chambers. The Frank Strozier and Kelly albums are top-notch. I wasn't too enamoured by the Morgan/Shorter set, but that may change after subsequent listens. Quote
Brad Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I really like the Kelly set, plus how can you go wrong with Frank Strozier. The Shorter set is good but I really do prefer the Kelly Chambers set. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 (edited) Last Chance Uh, has anybody noticed that both sets are now on the "Last Chance" list??? Not on the "Running Low" list, but "Last Chance". Saw this on AAJ just now... I just got a confirmation from Mosaic Records that their licensing agreement for the two Vee Jay sets will expire later this year. Hence these sets will go OOP in 2004. Their next catalogue in May will list it as running low. (Rabid?) fans of the related artists or Mosaic enthusiasts may want to take note. Here's the AAJ thread: HERE I supposed this has already been brought up in the other thread on "Last Chance / Running Low" sets (which I haven't looked at), but I thought I'd mention it here - since it was news to me. EDIT: Adding the big "Last Chance" things in red, so that this post gets noticed by more . Last Chance Edited May 14, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Free For All Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 If I could only buy one of them, I'd get them both. Quote
EKE BBB Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 The Morgan/Shorter, because I have a great part of the Kelly material on previous releases. Quote
David Ayers Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Uh, has anybody noticed that both sets are now on the "Last Chance" list??? Not on the "Running Low" list, but "Last Chance". Last chance! Some people will start to get ill over this! That said, there are other ways to access most of this music, at least for now... Quote
vibes Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Uh, has anybody noticed that both sets are now on the "Last Chance" list??? Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered both. Quote
jazzmessenger Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Wow, those Vee Jay sets are already in "Last Chance"... They were still in "Running Low" a few days ago (even though the May catalog said they were in "Last Chance"). Too many Mosaic box sets have/will become OOP this year. I bought Blue Mithchell, then T.K.M. Now I have to pick up two Vee Jay sets... I am supposed to save money for my wedding, but I guess I will have to buy those two sets soon. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I am supposed to save money for my wedding, but I guess I will have to buy those two sets soon. You can always get married later (reschedule) -- but when a Mosaic goes OOP, it's gone for good!!! I'm sure she'll understand. Quote
Dave James Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Rooster - God do I love that kind of logic. The world is full of good women, but good jazz that's going OOP? It's simply a matter of priorities, and getting them straight. Up over and out. Quote
jazzmessenger Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Tom, I am sure she will But honestly, she doesn't really want me to buy box sets because I rarely listen to them. I haven't even opened Thad Jones, Curtis Fuller, Blue Mitchell sets I bought long time ago. Plus, I have way too many single CDs that I haven't listened. I am sure I will listen to those sets eventually (Maybe when I retire in 35 years ) I kind of told her that I wanted the Stitt set for my upcoming birthday, but now I better tell her about two Vee Jay sets, instead. Rooster_Ties Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Heck, Shoji, I didn't even look at the username and realize that was you. On second thought, don't tell her I said that!! Quote
Brad Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Further to Rooster's post about last chance, here's the related topic. Quote
BruceH Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 A no-brainer, for me: The Morgan/Shorter, one of my favorite Mosaics of all time. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I haven't even opened Thad Jones, Curtis Fuller, Blue Mitchell sets I bought long time ago. Damn it, go open that Thad Jones set!!! Quote
jazzmessenger Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 Heck, Shoji, I didn't even look at the username and realize that was you. On second thought, don't tell her I said that!! It's too late, Tom. She seemed upset when I told her about rescheducling the wedding for Mosaic sets. But as soon as I told her that you said it, she started laughing. She remembers you as a very funny guy. Quote
