Brandon Burke Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 I just found out about this last night at the Six Organs of Admittance show. I'm quite excited, having not seen Bennink before. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 How was Six Organs? I fade in/out on the psyche/folk/noise/improv u-ground scene... he's no Fahey or Iron & Wine but maybe something else I'd like if I listened to the newer stufff. Brandon-- do you know the Sandy Bull Vanguard recordings? clem I love those Sandy Bull records. Six Organs was just him w/o accompaniment. Vocals on about half of the tunes that I could go either way on. Not bad enough to be in the way but not really adding anything either. Not unlike Robbie Basho in that respect. In fact, his playing is much more like Basho than Fahey as well. To that end, I agree that he's no Fahey but I don't think that that's really the point. Fahey plays considerably fewer notes and some of Six Organs runs are outlandishly fast. I mean it's ridiculous. And by that I mean ridiculously good. I have not heard any of the records, however, so I'm speaking only for the line show that I saw last night. It was great. As for the psych/folk underground, my two favorite records of the year so far probablt fall into that category: (1) Rejoicing in the Hands by Devendra Banhart and (2) Sung Tongs by the Animal Collective. It's becoming clear that we have quite a bit in common, Clem. Cheers, B. Quote
Johnny E Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 For those who have never seen Han Bennink perform, I cannot urge you strongly enough to go and check him out. He is a master! He doesn't even need drums...give him some sticks and watch him play the room! His technique is impeccable, his demeanor is hilarious and his sound is enormous. Him and Hamid Drake are, in my opinion, the two true FORCES of modern jazz drumming. To all my Texas friends, get your tickets NOW without delay! Don't Mess With Han Bennink! Quote
Joe G Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Don't Mess With Han Bennink! Mijn Geheugen Is Een Zeef! (I have no idea what that means. It's a song on a Clusone Trio record.) Quote

Brandon-- do you know the Sandy Bull Vanguard recordings? clem I have always dug the "Fantasias..." LP on Vanguard. Some of it feels like eclecticism for its own sake, but interesting. Especially in its historical context. The piece titled Blend is especially nice, with Billy Higgins. I might just have to throw this on tonight... Quote
Big Al Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Arrrrgh!!!! What does it take to get these class acts up to the DFW area??!?! Just may have to take a long weekend to see this one! Quote
epistrophy arts Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 Arrrrgh!!!! What does it take to get these class acts up to the DFW area??!?! Just may have to take a long weekend to see this one! You just have to invite them... Seriously, all it takes is 1 or a couple of dedicated folks to set it up. Rent a space, book a hotel room, make some flyers, write a press release etc. It is risky and often frustrating, but worth it. Try to find a few folks willing to guarantee some $$ against losses. The important thing is to stick with it until a solid audience builds around your events. Some people spend more on records and stereo equipment than we lose on events. We could definitely use another stop in Texas for visiting improvisers. There are so many artists who want to come to Texas. I get so many proposals it is ridiculous. I can only manage to do a handful of concerts a year, and I need to limit my activity to artists I really believe in. With enough stops in Texas (Austin, Houston, San Antonio, DFW, Marfa?) a visiting artist could manage an entire tour... Are there any other folks in this forum who are involved in grass-roots presenting? I would love to hear about your experiences. Quote
Big Al Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 Unfortunately, I wouldn't know the first thing about promoting a concert. Especially for an artist whose work I'm only familiar with through forums like these--seriously, I'm pretty sure I've never heard any of his work. I don't know..... if I thought I had that kind of energy..... Quote
Brandon Burke Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 We're really lucky here in Austin to have organizations like the Epistrophy Arts group that are willing to put forth this kind of an effort. The shows are always good. Thanks, PG. Brandon Quote
epistrophy arts Posted May 19, 2004 Author Report Posted May 19, 2004 Thanks Brandon, I really appreciate it. I'll keep doing the concerts as long as people come out... Quote
